Also, apparently when Lucas showed the rough cuts to the studio execs, the FX shots were still being worked on, and he inserted pieces from various WW2 films in their places (probably those two films themselves!).

Very funny, but what most people do not realise is that the Death Star attack is heavly influanced by the Dambusters film!!
Check the formations that the X-wings and Y-wings fly in when they enter the trench. George Lucas classes the Dambusters as one of his faverate films.
