Moth Rally at Woburn 2007

A new thread, rather digging up an old one.

Posted by Propstrike

Well, Woburn 07 rolls round again, today being the first half.

Despite much comment and feedback, it seems that the Woburn marketing gang will not relent on the aggressive pricing.

Just beware that it will cost Β£10 per head today and Β£15 tommorow.
Under 15’s no charge. Some people will see this as reasonable and others may not, but information posted here simply to avoid surprises to those who have gone for many years but had maybe missed the recent trippling of admission.

Last year some naughty people parked in Woburn village, and simply walked the half mile down the public road into the park, where you could see everything. Tsk Tsk……….

I used to be in the recovery back up for the old car rally which used to share the park and you could just watch both for nothing.

I even remember a AN2 one year cant remember if it landed or not though, i was also there when the trainer crashed a few years back πŸ™

I know it’s a long shot … a really long shot, but my mother got a flight in G-AZZZ on Saturday – has anyone got any pictures of the pleasure flights, in the hope that there’s one of her!

I sadly couldn’t make it πŸ™

Well the great British summer struck Woburn this year. It was very wet with occasional poor visibility, at times windy, sometimes very low cloud with some tree tops disappearing from sight on the hills. The weather Gods were not kind. There was a brief improvement on Sunday afternoon during the airshow.

However we had a great time with Moth aficionados from all over the world. Only about 40 aircraft arrived over the three days and a few might well still be there since the weather as I left at 1730 was getting awful again.

Only a couple of the annual awards were made even though the club president Henrietta, the Dowager Duchess of Bedford, was there on Sunday afternoon – looking her usual beautiful self. The numbers of aircraft attending were such as to make it unfair to judge those few that did make it compared with the hordes that did not.

The Sunday afternoon airshow was badly affected since a shed load of aircraft just could not fly in from their bases. We did have –

Dragon and Dragonfly flypast

Dragon Rapide demonstration

Fox Moth and Hornet Moth demonstration

Moth Minor and Leopard Moth demonstration

Miles Messenger demonstration

Tiger Moth diamond four formation

Jackaroo, Chipmunk and Turbulent barnstorming routines including flour bombing, balloon bursting and limbo

Everyone who participated did a great job in entertaining those present.

In the display practice slots on Saturday we had an absolutely magic display by John Beaty in the Seafire XVII and another from the Shuttleworth Westland Lysander.

Stuart, Miranda and Melissa McKay did an excellent job with the organising and administration as did Colin Dodds and Steve LeVien along with so many others including the Mainwaring Volunteer Force and the indefatigable refuelling squad.

No doubt there will be excellent coverage in β€œThe Moth” magazine in a future edition. I did not remember to take any photographs but loads of others did.

Cheers,

Woburn almost ALWAYS gets gets good weather, but in this cursed summer perhaps it was too much to expect. The turnout was thin, with just 20 or so aeroplanes on the field at noon. No sea of Tigers, not a DH60 to be seen, but a nice Aeronca, and Messenger G-AKIN amongst others.

The vintage cars were in short supply, and they slithered around in the mud getting up the hill. The was a huge outbreak of yellow jackets, and with nothing much to do, they gathered in massive herds, roaming around the flightline to spoil as many photos as possible. Still, the event must have been incredibly safe as a result.

By 3.30 Captain Neville’s Flying Circus had done their thing, the stallholders were boxing up, and aircrew started quick, efficient walkrounds before firing up and heading for home. I hope everyone had a safe trip back, as it was all getting rather grey and low.

On the way home, I saw a glider and tug dissappear into cloud at 400 feet, towing out of Dunstable. The tug whizzed out in a steep dive, and the now-abandoned and no doubt surprised glider also re-emerged to make a very high speed circuit!

Went today {sunday} price down to ten pounds. The Dragon and Dragonfly left early down to the weather. Numbers well down on aircraft this year. Still nice! Only found a few very small bits of Stirlings.

Why not join the de Havilland Moth Club if you are worried about the entry prices to Woburn? Β£9 entry to Woburn Abbey grounds valid for both days, free entry to the flightline for a member and guest and also a superb magazine.

It only takes 15 minutes for me to get there. Also like looking for bits of Short Stirling in the grass where they cut them up atfer the war.
