Places to go in the Czech Republic

I am off to the Czech Republic on Saturday for 10 days. I am going to be staying near Prague and will have a couple of days to do with what I like. Can anyone suggest places to go, aviation museums etc etc?

I think Pragues only about two hours drive from Krakow

Much, much more than two hours. Even if I do the driving.

I think Pragues only about two hours drive from Krakow, which has the excellent nationl air museum (in the centre somehwere). That’s where most of the pre-WWII Berlin technical museum airframes ended up, as well as lines and lines of Migs.

Another aircraft museum is located in Zruc, just north of Plzen. But, before I start to repeat myself: here’s what I wrote about Vyskov and Zruc in an earlier thread, with a link to a video I made at the Vyskov Museum:

The Prague Technical Museum is also an awesome place ……………

I agree and was fortunate enough to visit it last year – but beware, the Technical Museum was due to close for complete refurbishment this year and I think it may still be closed at present, so check out beforehand or you may be frustrated.

The Red Baron restaurant in Prague offered reduced price meals to pilots. You’ll need to show a licence.

Good food and nice atmosphere with some memorabilia around.

I would agree Prague Technical Museum is superb. It does not have a huge number of exhibits but the quality of what it has is superb – have been there a couple of times. It includes three unique survivors on our WW1 list, some quite interesting (and extensive) aircraft models, and a superb collection of cars including a pre war Grand Prix Mercedes (from memory a W125) and a GP Bugatti (cant remember if was a T35 or T53). But the best exhibit is in this photo (taken with a 20mm lens, which emphasises how tightly packed in it all is) – that will wind you all up! You might like a beer afterwards on the terrace on top the hill overlooking the river afterwards, which is only about 100 yards away.

If you get fed up with the pick pockets in Prague and are looking for general tourist destinations České Krumlov is fabulous, and if you have the time České Budějovice (and just not for the beer!), Mariánské Lázně and Telč (although there is not a lot of the historic centre) are well worth a visit. But each to his own…

The Prague Technical Museum is also an awesome place with loads of aircraft hanging from the ceiling (not as many as Kbely) plus if you like cars, trains ect then it is worth a visit. Are you driving whilst you are there ? On the outskirts of Mlada Boleslav about 60km from Prague there is an IL-18 on the motorway which used to serve food….basically a motorway services with a difference but i think it has closed now which is a pity as we used to have a brilliant meal while sitting in airliner seating !

Kbely is definitely worthwhile, here are some other highlights of the region, most of which are not aviation related:

The aviation museum at Kbely on the outskirts of Prague is always good for a visit.

Another place I visited years ago – I assume its still there?? – is Vyskov.

Great aviation museum, a few hours drive from Prague – a bit vague I know, but if you can get there, it is (was?) worth it.

I found their website:- http://www.lhs-vyskov.cz/cz/exhib.aspx?cat=let
