Quick Question Weston Park Proms Spitfire

does anyone know…

Did a Spitfire display at the Weston Park proms (weather forecast was a bit iffy on Saturday).

If so, which one was it and did it stop over or refuel anywhere local to Weston ?

Rob68,

Some nostalgic photographs that do capture the essence of the Barnstormers type of display. I reckon three of them show me flying G-AIXD in both her colour schemes. The late David Needham is in the Piper L21B Super Cub. A great display pilot who sadly died from cancer a few years ago. His son, Justin, now displays the same aircraft along with a Cessna 0-1 Bird Dog.

Thank you so much for your efforts.

Found these shots out of what i believe is you and your colleagues at Weston Park from 1986, 1987 and 1988. Let me know if they are you/what you think. (They have been scanned so quality is not that good)

Rob68,

Your photo shows the Extra EA300 operated by Ultimate High from Kemble aerodrome. It is a highly aerobatic two seater monoplane used for airshows along with advanced training in aerobatics and formation flying. They also provide experience in combat manoevering against another aircraft of the same or dissimilar type. The engine is a Lycoming IO-540 of over 260 hp and the airframe is mainly of composite carbon and glass fibre construction.

Rob68,

Your photos come up with the following message –

“current album:Rob1968 bucketsites|buy prints
This file no longer exists”

I will look at my personal airshow data base as soon as I can and let you have the Weston airshow details in terms of aircraft types, registrations and dates. It would be great to get a few photos from those days.

Many thanks,

Skybolt,

ill have a look to see if i can dig up any decent photos from that time from Weston for you but dont hold your breath, they would have been taken on a 110 camera! Let me know if you can be any more specific on years/aircraft.

the following Spitfire shots were taken by the canal that runs round the back of Shrugborough on Sat night.

Rob68 –

I flew in nearly all the Weston Park shows organised by the Barnstormers Flying Circus at the request of the Earl and Countess of Bradford. Types I flew there included the Tiger Moth, Nipper, Stampe, Chipmunk and Evan VP1 Volksplane. We usually operated from a strip on site but sometimes from RAF Cosford, only 5 miles or so down the road.

The, then, Earl was president of the British Tree Society or whatever the correct title is. The park had mature examples of virtually every species of tree found in the UK with a huge number from abroad. He was quite paranoid about the possibility of our hitting one of his prized trees and so were we. At times the low excess power available, slope, tailwind, temperature and humidity meant having to make a tortuous flight path to go through rather than over the foliage. This was especially so for the Tiger with a girl on the wing.

I also did an aerobatic display there in the early 1980’s in Pitts S2E G-BKTC. In this case there was some speculation as to whether the organiser, not the BFC, was going to do a moonlight flit. A situation rare but not unknown in the airshow world. The strip length was fragile for the type but I just managed to stop when landing uphill. A wretched manhole which protruded some 4 inches above the surrounding grass but impossible to see from the cockpit marked the effective strip limit. Without stopping the engine I grabbed the dosh, turned 180 degrees and departed downhill. Phew…..!!!
Another triumph of luck and skill overcoming sound airmanship.

1st air show ever went to was at Weston Park approx ’78. Remember seeing Douglas Bader there, n then walking to his departing aircraft in that walk of his. In hind site i used to really enjoy those shows as only 10 miles from home.

It reads as if you used/do fly, may i ask what?

If any one is interested Rod Dean will be displaying another Spitfire over Shrugborough Hall on Cannock Chase Sat night for another proms event at approx 7.00pm

Shades of Neil Williams in MH434 at a Barnstormers Air Show there in the mid 1970’s.

The proximity of the trees and the rising ground make for a challenging venue at low level as I know well. The adrenaline expended during many of my display slots certainly came close to marking my linen.

PS – In the last photo the ack-ack fire seems to have been somewhat late if it was to deter Charlies fast passes.

Weston Park

Just got round to editing these from Sat at Weston Park. Glorious weather all day then started to get worse around 17.00hrs untill approximateley 19.00hrs when the rain started, then carried on all night.

Im surprised Charlie Brown turned up as i thought rain damaged props. As always Charlie put on a great show, even if a bit low!!
