Duxford's R.E.8 colour scheme

Just been looking at Pen Pusher’s photos inside AirSpace – very nice.

First time I have seen a pic that included the R.E.8 (behind the nose of the Tiger Moth) that shows the nose cowls.

I may have asked this before but are the burnished/polished nose cowls correct? I have long thought they were painted grey – surely reflective bare aluminium panels would have compromised the camouflage of an already-vulnerable aircraft.

Can you camo & markings experts out there put me right?

Roger Smith.

My understanding is that these would have been painted grey – often referred to as Battleship grey. This was standard for most British inline engined aircraft of the period.

However there are known cases of polished aluminium on other aircraft, so perhaps there is documentary evidence to supprt the restoration colours?
