old wheel

Hi; I recently found an old airplane wheel I would like help in idenifying. It has 40 spokes (it’s wire wheel). It has a grease fitting with the name ALE and patent date of 6/24/1919. It has a Goodrich Silvertown 24×4 tire which has no tread. The tire has a serial number but I couldn’t find any research information. I believe it’s 1919-1920’s. Any help on application would be appreciated. Value? Thanks

Well, found a partial pic of a Jenny wheel, about a quarter of one at least and the 40 spoke count looks on the money. Some of the JN’s I saw had “solid” wheels, don’t know if they were caps or not, but they were inside and out, so I would assume not spoked wheels on some versions. Not much up on Jennys. There is bound to be a Jenny about that someone can take a snapshot of.

Here are the best pics I could find. The one on the right, the blurry one, seems to show a smooth tire per your description.

Measured the diameter and it appears to be 16 1/2 inches. The majority of the wheel is steel but the hub section appears to have a brass section. I found an old Goodrich ad (1926) which showed the tire…black and smooth. Does anyone have the specs of a wheel from a Jenny so I can compare? A close up pic would be super. If it turns out to be that, just a ballpark figure on value please? Thanks again JO BO

HI; Thanks for your replies. The tire does also say AIRPLANE on the side wall and is black with a Goodrich crest and two red/orange sideways diamonds. I haven’t been able to look at a Jenny wheel up close but from those that I have seen from afar it looks similar. Thanks JO BO

JOBO – are you after an Ebay valuation figure for the item?

Hi Jo Bo – welcome to the Forum.

I can’t help with your enquiry but just note you mention a smooth/treadless tyre. To me that suggests it might be aeronautical – I would imagine at that time there was still considerable commonality between automobile and aeronautical wheels.
