Paterson Hughes markings???

Does anybody know the individual aircraft letter for Pat Hughe’s spitfire that he was killed in on September 7 1940? I know the serial was X4009 and the squadron codes were AZ.Any info would be great.thanks in advance,

Cheers,Daz

G’day again James,

my interest in Pat Hughes is twofold, firstly he is Australian and secondly,I like to build 1/48 scale models of well known and not so famous fighter pilots.I started out just doing Mustang aces of the USAAF but now I like to build all nationalities, mainly WW2 though I’m venturing into WW1,Spanish Civil War,Korea and Vietnam.I would love to build the Spitfire I have in honour of a brave Australian.

I have always had an interest in aces and aviation ever since I was a kid,my dad had a book by Christopher Shores called simply,”Fighter Aces” (in fact i still have it 30 years on).I have just about read the words off it !!:D

There are some enormously* knowledgeable Spitfire experts here, and some may be able to help. AFAIK there’s no major listing that’s been compiled as you ask, but it’s remarkable how much is known.

This thread should be of interest, and the Battle of Britain Society website has some interesting stuff, as well as some nuggets in discussions on their forum, IIRC.

What’s your interest?

Cheers

* You should see the sizes of their libraries, I have… 😀

Hi James

I thinks it is like looking for the holy grail.Maybe there is a register of spitfire serial codes somewhere that could help.

Hi Daz,
I don’t recall ever seeing a reference to his final machine’s code, but I’d be interested in hearing, if anyone knows.

Thanks to some work by Geoff Kennell, and the BoB society, and some research I carried out at the AWM and RAAF Museum, I’m now in touch with a couple of family members, who I’m sure would be interested too.

I’d like to get a profile drawn, but that is the missing item.
Cheers
