Hello Forumites;
Please let me introduce myself as I am a brand new member from one of the colonies, seeking to tap the seemingly limitless pool of wartime historical data and knowledge that resides within this forum. I have visited the forum numerous times before as a guest and find it very informative and quite entertaining at times.
In getting straight to the task at hand, on behalf of my father who served as a ground crewman in 6th Bomber Group RCAF, I am trying to establish the identity of the aircraft and crew that he went on a “Cook’s Tour” with in June or July of 1945. The aircraft was a 6th Group RCAF Lancaster with the nose art name of “Excreta Thermo”. My father once showed me a photo of the crew in front of the aircraft which unfortunately, he no longer seems to be able to locate. In not having the photo at hand, I have no other identifying marks or squadron information to aid in the search. My father vaguely recalls the flight may have originated out of Linton-on-Ouse or perhaps Skipton-on-Ouse if these were 6th Group airfields. My father remembers travelling to the airfield on a relatively short bus ride from where he was stationed at 6th Group H.Q. (Lord Mobry’s castle near Nesborough).
The flight took my father (in the mid-upper turret) and a couple of WD’s over the Ruhr (Cologne, Achen, Duisburg) where my father was nearly overcome by the completeness of the destruction. He remembers the central cathedral as the only structure still relatively intact in the heart of Cologne.
I’m afraid the above are all the clues I can provide. Any help from you gentlemen would be appreciated. Best regards, Mk1.
