MAM Stuff

Their Whirlwind has now been repainted and re-positioned in what I can loosley describe their “Interactive Area”. This area, at the top of the site, includes the Argosy and the HS125 (as well as the Vulcan and BP111) and has gathered together the airframes that MAM specifically use for public access, training and group/school visits.

The Argosy for example is pretty near perfect for a visiting group or school class with one of the interior compartments in the hold having full seating thereby allowing talks etc. The HS125, apart from the demo (working) hydraulics, can accomodate a small group or a number of older children for talks, etc. The cockpits of both the Argosy and the HS125 are also very accesible – not so much with the Whirlwind though. The Whirlwind has been moved up to join this set because, I’m told, school classes of younger children love congregating in its capacious cabin.

The Whirlind has now been painted to represent a Bristow colour scheme of the late 50s. Looks better to my eye, rather than the dark red/blue scheme of before. Blades had to be removed of course but they’re presented alongside the airframe.

The F.51 Hunter is now in artic camo. Actually it looks better like this I reckon. 😉

Hmm, you mean this could be the ‘winter of discontent’? Please don’t say that some red and blue paint will be added to this?:(

Why is it that airframes always tend to look good in white?

Albert,

out of those choices an F.5 might, perhaps, be the most attractive due to the local connection of the A.S.Sapphire – but were the tailpipes of Sapphire and Avon engined Hunters the same?

Roger Smith.

The Marks 1-5 shared the same tail-pipe with upswept underside and it was not changed until the Avon-powered Mk.6 and of course the Mk.9 which had the parachute fairing.

Roger Smith.

The tailpipe shapes are the same, but the position of the various vents, small intakes etc. around the rear fuselage aren’t.

The F.4 is the closest match to an F.51, but why not give the aeroplane it’s original identity and colour scheme back?

I can only confirm that it WONT be the Black Arrows scheme again.

If I revealed anything else at this stage Roger Im afraid it would be upon fear of being shot.

And we wouldnt want that now would we? 😀

I have suggested it is repainted as the first production F.1 WT555 overall silver, as it has the correct tail pipe shape and non-sawtooth wing leading edge to portray an F.1,4 or 5 but no other variant unless it is put back into its original Danish Air Force scheme as an F.51. Painting it as WT555 would be good to show the Hunter history, to depict one of the first Hunters alongside the other MAM Hunter, which was one of the last built.

I have the same concerns Roger….. (about me) :diablo:

Sad to say that this year has been a total flop as far as my attendance goes. My new circumstances have pushed me further away from free time than ever before. Even getting online is a brief journey these days. I seem to be working and sleeping with a heavy dose of house restoration thrown in between coffee breaks 🙁 It will all get sorted eventually – and I will drive there and try and get in the door…

Here’s a few of our Whirlwind.

http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?aircraftsearch=&airlinesearch=&placesearch=&countrysearch=&adv_remark=&photographersearch=&emailsearch=&regsearch=g-apwn&cnsearch=&codesearch=&datesearch=&id=&yearsearch=&specialsearch=&specialsearch2=&sort_order=photo_id+desc&page_limit=15&thumbnails=&maxres=500&advanced_search=true&engine_version=6.0

Oooops all in the old colours Im afraid 😀

Weve given you a sneaky pic of the old girl and I think that if anyone is interested in seeing some more of her new colours they should come along to our museum and have a peek at her.

As nice as posting on the web is it don’t pay for the materials to restore, paint and care for our ladies 😉

All I will say and no disrespect to the pic Les posted, it doesnt do her justice, you need a full on side view to appreciate the new scheme and realise just how diff and atractive she now looks.

Personally I think a picture of Bostin01 and his facial hair should be posted. I heard on the sly that it was scaring the kids away from the Museum so thats why he’s not up that much anymore y’see…. 😉

But before we chase the thread totally off-topic, it has to be said what a good job has been done on the Whirlwind, it seemed to sit quite lonely at the bottom of the site in the midst of more “Interesting” beasts like the Voodoo and Phantom. Now its up top in its attractive scheme it dosn’t seem to be the hellicopter Cindarella anymore. 🙂
