I am looking for information regarding the accident that grounded this aircraft, all I know so far is that during 1984 when on the strength of 31 Squadron it clipped a tower at Charwelton and made an emergency landing at RAE Bedford (Thurleigh). Does anyone have any extra info such as pilot name, where it was coming from/to, what was it doing, photos of the damage (or the aircraft in general)? Also is there a means to obtain accident investiagtion reports from the RAF?
Any help is greatly appreciated

During a sortie in bad weather the pilot decided to climb out from low-level. As aircraft entered cloud at approx 1500ft it struck the Charwelton Radio Tower, damaging the port wing. The port engine surged and stagnated at 70%, however the aircraft remained controlable. The pilot transmitted a mayday and proceeded to head for Bedford, aborting a landing on RW09 with a single engine overshoot he eventually landed on RW27.
The aircraft hit the tower at a point 380ft above its base, the cause of the accident being put down to Aircrew Error – the pilot continuing to fly in less than specified weather minima and carrying out an incorrect weather abort procedure.

I was at Abingdon in the mid 80s and seem to remember an aircraft coming in having suffered a cable strike to the port wing in Italy IIRC.

Thanks Jagrigger, 5 feet is a decent slice to take off especially at low level. Anyone else with info or leads?

We had the wing from this one ( I believe ) in the Wing Bay at Abingdon. Outer 5 feet or so missing from mid spoiler position. I was aware it was a RAFG aircraft wing, but thought the accident had been in Germany.
Saw another similar wing taken off the one that hit the Tornado ( tragically killing the crew ) That one diverted into Leeming, I believe.
