Fuel burn on a P-51

I thought it would be easy to find detail on fuel burn of a P-51 in civil use.

Wrong…

I get numbers from as high as 75 gallon hr to as low as 30 gallon hr, anyone have reliable first hand experience?

If you throttle way back you can get as much as 5mpg. The term around SoCal for this method of operation is “jew cruise”:D

From an article by Connie Bowlin on flying the Mustang in Warbirds Worldwide. “”The fuel flow is 180 GPH at take-off power, 90 GPH at METO and low cruise is 60 GPH”.

Thanks guys…

To be a little more specific I’m looking at cross country fuel burn, econo cruise. I’m trying to insure I’ve budgeted correctly for a P-51 that is flying in for one of our events in June.

A really good guy he is flying in from 2000 miles away to join us and we are covering the fuel costs.

About 60 gallons/hour in cruise

about twice as much in a display (max. continous power)

This is what I heard from a Mustang pilot a few days ago:

About 60 gallons/hour in cruise and about twice as much in a display (max. continous power)

In civil mode, you could still be at Reno :p

…fuel burn of a P-51 in civil use.

You need to specify what flight regime… or combat.

That’s naughty with a civvie ‘Stang. 😀 Let’s say ‘display flying’ for that higher energy effort.

The variance in figures is down to the variable fuel consumption. It depends what the aeroplane is doing. In cruise at height with a lean mixture it could well be as little as 30 galls and hour (and do you want US or Imperial gallons?) and at full throttle I would think 70 was economic.

You need to specify what flight regime, take off, cruise, economic cruise or combat.

Hi Tom,
I’m sure you’ll get some good responses here, but the forum founder at Airshow Buzz, Ed Shipley is a highly experienced P-51 pilot, and would be able to give you some useful feedback, along with other users like Jim Beasley.

Good website, too!
