Hi All
Can anyone point me in the direction of an Engine Start Panel for a Viper 102 powered Jet Provost Mk-3A (I don’t have a part number, sorry). Without one we will not be able to fast taxi our aircraft (XN584) at the May 27th Bruntingthorpe open day.
It needs to be in working order but NOT airworthy.
If anyone had one that they were willing to donate, I would repay them with a free pass to the event and a taxi run in one of the Jet Provost’s.
Many thanks in advance,

Hi Paul
I have no doubt that we will come into contact with a Mk-5 quite soon, so the advice may well be very usefull!!
Best wishes,
Go for it, top of the range model, electric sunroof, aircon (well, OK pressurisation…), less miles on it and looks a whole lot more attractive!

Hi Paul
I can’t see any way I can make it before the open day due to work commitments, and none of the other guys can make it either.
Could you e-mail me at ritch@gamefreaks.freeuk.com so that we can sort something out?
Thanks also to everyone who has posted on this subject, I have no doubt that we will come into contact with a Mk-5 quite soon, so the advice may well be very usefull!!
Best wishes,

Just an idea for a possible back-up plan.
Could you try the Rolls Royce Heritage Trust Coventry Branch – they are specialists on the Viper. There may be some members visiting Bruntingthorpe today (13th) to look at the Vulcan.

Sounds a good tip, but the MK5 must have had the TDU or a related sub-component relating to the same, that the 3’s and 4’s did’nt. There’s no component that would benefit from a thump in that area on our Mk’s as far as i know anyway.
Ritch, i can’t make it to Brunty before the Open day on the 27th due to commitments on my free days. Can you or a volunteer from our midst pick up the part from Metheringham / Ruskington in Lincolnshire on their travels ?

Hey M+R,
Dunno if this is your problem, but when something similar used to happen on the 5A, we used to get the driver to keep the start button depressed, then thump the top right quarter of the left fuselage roundel, behind which was the relay/timer? You’d hear it motor over and then the hairdryer would start!

I remember being told this, another way of finding it was to look for an indent in the fuselage! 😀

It’s a plug!!
Hi Paul
I just talked to Malc and Roy, they are sure it is a unit with a plug on it, and agree with your diagnosis. They have had there heads in the nose bay looking at the problem whilst Max and me have been re-painting the aircraft, so they know better than me. So over to you!

Hi Ritch
It sounds like the TDU (time delay unit).
One important point , we need to know if the wiring connection to the TDU is a plug that screws into the bottom of the black box, or the wiring from the black box comes out (not part of a plug) and into a relay. It’s one of the two, but i don’t know which it is on a 3A.

Re Fault
Hi Paul
The problem, put simply is that when I press the start button, nothing happens. In the begining, the start engaged light would illuminate for a split second, but we don’t even get that now. Once pressed a timer should engage the relay to hold in the start button, but it isnt doing so. Holding the start button in by hand has no effect at all. I understand that a mechanical timer is part of the circuit, and it could be this is seized up, but I cant be sure.
Any ideas you may have will be greatfully received!
Best wishes,

Hi Ritch
Do you know which component on the start panel has gone faulty, i don’t have a full panel spare, and our own panel is installed in our Mk4, but we could help if the fault can be tied to the TDU etc ?

Paul
