Spitfire ML295

During my holiday in Normandy last week, I visited the Juno Beach Centre (http://www.junobeach.org). There’s a temporary exhibition about the air war. Centre piece of this exhibition is a partially restored Spitfire mkIX wreck. See pictures. The fuselage seems to be in pretty good condition. Is this restored from original parts, new made of are these parts of another Spitfire?

If Spitfires continue to be recovered in France there will be no shortage of rebuild projects for the future .

what’s known about this wreck?

Seems to be more than enough material there to warrant a re-build

over (to Mark12) I guess… 😉

I would suggest that the cowlings, top tank cover, front windscreen and canopy are originals but not from the crashed aircraft.

This aircraft was originally credited with the RAF serial NH341.

This is very fine exhibit and I have examined it in depth.

I do not think we are seeing the whole story here. I have my doubts. 🙂

This was originally in the Bayeux museum, but the owner moved it, I believe the story was it crash (belly) landed ending up in a pond in the war, the rear fuselage was sticking out and the Germans used it for target practice, it is all from the one aircraft.

The owner retrieved the wreck and reconstructed it as such, I dont think the cockpit is original but all the bits are chunks like a big jigsaw in amazing condition with original paint and stencilling.

Very definately a project for the future !
