Was at Cosford today and G-AOVF is slowly being encased in scaffolding! Spoke with a member of staff who confirmed she was being repainted but he said they hadn’t been told what colours. I attach a few photos – sorry for the quality but they were with my camera phone. I’ll go back soon with a proper camera.
Does anyone have any info on what colours she’ll reappear in?

Not very good I’m afraid, but these were taken on the 28 April, the elevators are still removed aswel.
Rich1977, Transport Command aircraft were gloss originally, even the camoflaged aircraft, the VC-10 was sometimes nicknamed the ‘shineyten’.
I think the Argosy, and definately the Varsity and Andover, have gone matt from sitting around outside. I remember that Varsity doing its last flight at St Mawgan and seeing the runway lines reflected in its underside.

110% sure there are no engines in VF (got pictures somewhere). Just the front end which bolts to the mount so that props can still be hung.
Ah, that’ll will explain why the intakes appear correct.

Not sure and I was surprised myself. I see you say in another thread that the engines are not installed. Are you absolutely sure about that? I could be wrong but it looked like they were from what I noticed (only casual glance) through the missing panels and intakes.
I think it is a combination of resource and weather as to why they havent finished her yet.

Tks for update. Weather aside, I wonder what the hold up is? You would think Cosford want her finished in time for the Air Show…

I visited a couple of weeks ago, and nope still not complete! Still requiring underside repaint and some engine/nacelle panels missing. Will post a pic soon.

Tks Jon. Looks pretty complete then, wonder if she’s now been finished?

The roof titles look a little too large compared with my photo of the real thing.
I’m sure this will be put right when Corgi produce their copy.

Now that the RAF/MOD has developed this overwhelming urge to paint inappropriate airframes in their colours, isn’t it about time they gave the cold war theme a memorial flight. Shackleton AEW, (ex Ukraine AF) Bear, a pair of Lightnings and a pair of F-4s should start things off OK We look at the “V” force for phase two. That will give their airships something to think about whilst locating suitable equipment for the Coastal Command memorial flight. It is our tax money after all.:dev2: :diablo:
Be lucky

AKA Mr Angry of Stockport.
I suggest a Ukrainian Bear as Mr. Putin appears to have his still fully active and may not be too kindly disposed to giving one away to us at the moment

They don’t necessarility need to repaint them Rich. The RAF Britannia fleet carried yellow tipped props until around 1969-1970 when they began to bring in the red/white/red tips.
I have photos of RAF Brits carrying ASC titles wearing both styles of prop tip colour.

I noticed the prop tips are still yellow, but maybe they haven’t done them yet….

Thanks for posting Rich. Good to see they’re making progess but as Albertross says, such a shame the titles are too big and incorrectly spaced.
In addition the silver (bare metal in service) on the cowlings should be right the back to the engine bulkhead, near the light, looks like they’ve only painted the very first part of the cowlings silver.
But at least this work will protect the airframe for a few more years, even though the scheme is totally inaccuate !!! And come on Cosford, where’s your plan for getting this one under cover????

Yes, drop me an IM with your e-mail address.
As regards the gloss – I thought RAF planes were matt paint or low gloss? If you look at the other transport planes like the Argosy or Andover then they are matt, others are very low gloss like the Varsity (I’m giving examples of aircraft at Cosford), but the Britannia is looking quite shiny.

Rich,
Would it be possible to get a Hi Res copy of the U/C picture? Have been looking for one to refer to whilst we work on the ones off our Brit 🙂
Cheers,
Jon

Thanks for posting these Rich. You say ‘although it’s gloss’, but it SHOULD be gloss! The roof titles look a little too large compared with my photo of the real thing, but at least it’s coming along nicely.

Bristol Britannia G-AOVF’s new identity
Was at Cosford today, apologies for the picture quality but it was a typical grey day in Shropshire so it was quite overcast. But here she is in her new colours as XM497 as predicted in a previous post. Attached are a few photos.
Having a look around her, it is good to see the staff at Cosford are spending some good time on her. Her forward and main gear are starting to look immaculate. There are a lot of underside panels missing, I guess these will be reattached after she is painted.
The paint job looks good (although it is gloss). Shame to see her loose her BOAC colours but on the other hand she is getting some much needed love and attention which can’t be a bad thing.

That landing photo really says it all, what a beautiful Bristol!
Just really glad the Cosford example is being restored.
