Duxford 30th April 2007

Evening all

This may be old news, but we enjoyed seeing the Hastings in it’s new scheme today.

The York was owned/restored by the Duxford Aviation Society, and done as a volunteer job over many years.

The Hastings is an IWM aircraft.

That Hastings does look nice – I agree with Peter’s comment about looking like a kit though. As an ignoramus were they painted silver in service or unpainted/polished bare skin?

I saw the Hastings when it looked very sad, then what seems only a few weeks ago, I saw it in the hangar being worked on by what seemed an army.
The paint was meticulously being removed, but it was basically a gutted shell.
To see it like this in such a short time is a miracle, why can’t the same criteria be adopted towards the York, which seems to have been sitting in the same place and state for years, I don’t mean to have a go at the people who are working on the York, but why wasn’t this finished first, they are more or less contemporaries anyway, so why does one suddenly get priority over the other, aren’t Yorks a rarer breed as well, is it something to do with ownership.
Well I shouldn’t really bother asking this as I will see it on Saturday, but is the airframe aluminium finish or has it been sprayed silver.

Is it just me or does the first pic of the hastings look like a model kit?
Ssame about the shackelton who left the panels off!!

Give it a few more weeks and it’ll look like the poor old Varsity…

Oh don’t mention the Varsity, it wont be long before it ventures toward the scrap man..

I understand the USAF special forces Hercs use the airfield for practice on occasions, I’ve seen USAF one’s there a couple of times. I know nothing about these aircraft though, just going on what I’ve been told / read. 🙂

Is the bird coming out of the shackleton knicking the wiring or just nesting in there ?

The hercules is a mystery though as it has US markings but no tail code either that or it mistook Duxford for Cambridge airport ?

Herc was 95831 looking at my other pics? Mean owt?

As for the starling, good question! They seem to be nesting in there.

The hastings looks fantastic and well worth the wait after the last few years of the fading scheme.
