Cranberry Surprise

I was just climbing out on Runway heading at Conington today, and when I got to around 800′ was most surprised to see the stunning planform of a Canberra at my 2 O’clock, 200′ above me, and only a couple of hundred yards away!
I put the nose down to try and stay out of the wake and then resumed my climb, only to hear him calling for a missed approach, as we were still on runway heading, we called in and turned 90 degrees, not only to get out of his way, but so we could then watch his climbing roll.

2 Other pilots in the circuit got rather excited on the radio about the caper, but having been used to sharing LFAs with fast jets in my dim and distant past we kept quiet and got on with the flight.

Talking it through later, we felt that they had done nothing wrong, but it might have been good airmanship to announce aircraft type when they came on Conington frequency, as we could tell he was wearing a mask, but we had no idea what to expect!

Putting all that aside, it was great to share a bit of the sky with the ol’ bird, and if you think they look graceful from the ground, try watching them air-air:cool:

I was already calling upon all 160 pure-bred Lycoming Horses just to haul my not inconsiderable weight (and my sylph-like instructor) into the sky at 80 kts:)

As the now space-bound Scotty would say: “You can have 90kts in a week, Captain”

The view I had was more of a top-view as it was banked to port as it crossed above and ahead of me

So you couldn’t catch up with it?:D

I had hoped that my wife had got a few pics of it’s missed approach, but unfortunately she was in the clubhouse buying my kids Ice Cream!
