Does anyone happen to have information about a collision between two No. 73 Squadron Hurricanes and several other mishaps on the 9th of October 1939?
The squadron was flying in bad weather, low cloud and snowy conditions, and were all out of gas in France. They’d overshot their destination at Rouves and in an attempt to get down at a small disused ex-WWI aerodrome near Verdun,(sorry I don’t know the name of the field but may have been known as Verdun? It had a couple of hangars and a barrack block that was riddled with mortar shells from WWI), there were apparently several aircraft incidents.
One chap apprently hit overhead cables, stalled and skidded in on the strip on his nose. And apparently Cobber Kain and another pilot, Peter someone both tried to land at the same time, and collided.
Two aircraft were written off and two were damaged (minor) in the squadron landing. Has anyone got further details please?
