Hi all
An appeal to all you cockpit owners out there !
Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre in Lincolnshire, has it’s Open Day on Sunday 6th May this year, and we have been allowed to expand the aircraft theme by inviting cockpiteers to the event for the first time.
This is a great opportunity for this beautiful site to build it’s on it’s WWII heritage, increase it’s profile in the historic aviation community and maybe add an important date to the cockpiteers diary. You could be a pioneer too !
Despite the short notice period, anyone interested in bringing their cockpit, or substantial aircraft project along will be more than welcome, it’s totally free of charge, and offers the chance to win one of a couple of available themed prizes.
All i will need are your details and a confirmed attendance, we will do the rest, i.e. free entry, allotted prime display space and a whole bunch of interested aircraft nuts (and the general public in it’s hundreds) to keep you busy.
Oh, and i forgot to mention , there are also two Jet Provosts now on site, XS186 and XS177, and visiting aircraft including the BBMF, in force, and the Lincolnshire / Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance based there for the day, so plenty of aircraft action on the ground and in the air.
It really is a very nice day, with other military themed events in an idyllic setting, so go on , be a devil, you will love it !

In addition to what Paul has already mentioned, there will be displays of Military equipment, vintage and classic cars, vintage bus tours around the old airfield, and many other attractions including a stall from 2503 Sqn RAuxAF from Waddington.
The 106 Sqn museum will be open as usual, so you will be able to find out about Metheringham airfield during WWII and visit many of the surviving buildings and shelters, including the superbly refurbished wartime gymnasium, and the largest flyable model Lancaster that you are ever likely to see.
Refreshments will also be on offer including the best Lincolnshire sausage in a bun that I have tasted.
Convinced? See you there! I will be in the museum, come along for a chat, and support this superb little museum as it preserves a very important part of our recent history..

Thanks Stuart
I know most of us tend to be seen as parts of an overall funny bunch, ask my other half !
Should’nt stop us trying to push for the development of good sites who have a real view towards the development of aviation heritage events (Lord knows we’ve lost enough over the years), and the adoption of new blood though.
I fully understand however, and the crew and i have got an almost unbreakable spirit after years of ‘why do you do it’ style approaches!
The invite therefore remains, and my scouting for participants will continue, via fora, and face to face with any fellow nutcases that i can track down!
Tenacity is in our toolboxes ….. next to the persuasion tool.

The cockpiteers in general aren’t a very adventurous bunch, but for a one day event its a big ask; in all of the years that I have been involved, we really only seem to get to one event (that being cockpitfest) and that happens at much the same time of year.
The biggest problem seems to be that only about 25% of the cockpit club membership ever venture out, and we have never been able to improve on that , even though its not the same 25% as it was 5 years ago.
Try not to take it personally (I try not to!)

Thanks for the note Steve, nice that the many man hours of labour that goes into these restorations is indeed appreciated.
Come on guys, any takers for what could be a great opportunity to see the expansion of an event, instead of a shrinking one ?

For anyone who hasn’t visited before, it’s well worth the trip and the more complete of the two JP is starting to look fabulous with the new lick of paint that is in the process of being applied.
best wishes,
Steve
