Cameras to be banned at Airshows!

Alistair Maclean brings some shocking photography news

GCHQ has advised the MoD that people taking pictures at airshows jeopardises National Security by allowing the ‘enemy’ to see our waning defences. Ministry officials feel that the reduction in secrecy at these bases as a consequence of letting the public on the bases also erodes the long sought-after Total Security Blanket (TSB) that the RAF has been trying to implement for some time. The Junior Minister for Defence said in the Commons that fines for unauthorised photography will be draconian as the Government needs some way of paying for the F-35, and it’s the only draw in town. Announcement at airshows of photography restrictions will only be made on a need-to-know basis and will be policed by Air Cadets, who will accept Visa, Maestro, Diners Club and most other major credit cards as payment for the on-the-spot fines.

This new restriction will deny many the opportunity to use Canon’s new Panning(R) Lens – hot on the heels of vibration elimination lenses, this lens will automatically allow for panning fast moving objects. The new Canon EOS 5D camera is rumoured to contain all necessary electronics to operate this new lens, which is capable of panning at up to seventy degrees a second – the user only has to stand on a slippery surface to enjoy the benefits of perfectly panned images. A pair of shoes with castors will also be available as an accessory, plus downloadable insurance claims forms for third-party injuries.

Strictly speaking it is crown copyright and if that has expired, which may be the case, then anyone can re-register it.

What the RAF may have done is register it as a trade mark.

Sad to say that the last one is NOT an April fool, MOD seem to think that the red/white/blue roundel is a copy righted item and can not be used without permission (and a liecence fee) hence there recent range of clothing feature the roundel.

I think you may find that the MOD were apparently forced into this action following a well known clothing manufacturers attempt to register the roundel for themselves.

As a model maker this is a worrying trend meaning to finish a model in authenic markings the decal maker needs permission to use the image and may be required pay for it. Some airlines given this permission free of charge, others have been very stubben and refused permisson to use there images. The decal maker would risk illegal action if they continued. I think that some decals for BEA / BOAC were stopped because British Airways, who own the rights to such ‘historic’ brands either said no or wanted a hugh fee.

Along similar lines in the US Pratt and Whitney (or who ever own the brand) stopped a company from selling 1/48 scale resin engines as ‘Pratt Whitney’ because of copyright. I think they were repackaged as ‘WW2 engine’

Well know manufacture Trumpter have recent issued excellent 1/72 models of Gannet and Wyvern, the box refers to them as ‘British’ and there is no mention of Westland, presumably for similar reasons.
