The Royals and the Comet

Perusing through an old photo album with my mother last night (she’s just moved house and discovered it after it lay forgotten in a pile of albums for years), we discovered photos of the Duke of Edinburgh leaving Khartoum, Sudan, in February 1965 after a state visit. Also in the album is the parents invitation to the official reception to mark the visit. Although the invite ostensibly comes from the Queen and Duke, here there is no sign of HM. Anyway, I post these three because they have aeroplanes in them but I have no other info as to their identities (I was but a nipper at the time). Hope someone finds them interesting. Oh, apologies if the photographer is looking, there are no credits on the prints, although chances are it was the Sudanese base photographer at SAF Khartoum where Dad worked.

2) Prince Philip walks across the apron to inspect the Guard of Honour.

Just out of interest, a couple of weeks ago, I was driving up to see a pal who lives north of Grantham, just off the A1, when, just before the service roundabout north of Grantham, travelling south was a Comet front fuselage mounted on an artic, painted grey and with an RAF roundel painted on the cut off rear, it seemed to be an RAF promotion vehicle/a/c, anyone have any info on it. Sorry to interfere with your excellent Royal Comet thread, I thought it may be the same one though, just a chance, who knows.

It sounds like the Comet fuselage that’s mocked up to look like a Nimrod and used for RAF recruiting. It used to be in ‘hemp’ colour. so maybe they have repainted it to look like the latest Nimrod scheme?

The aircraft in the background of the first photo appears to be a British United Airways DC-6 and the BOAC Comet 4 is G-APDD.

Interesting as this Comet was featured in a four print ltd issue series commisioned by British Airways….I think in the Queens Silver Jubilee year depicting 4 different BEA/BOAC/BA aircraft she’d used on various overseas visits during the previous 25 years.

I have the set of four which were left to me by a late Uncle who worked for BA at the time.
