Is this for real?

I’m always looking on Ebay for airplane stuff and came across this engine. Ebay seems like an odd place for a merlin engine.

You know too much!!; whats that pump thingy where the starter motor should be?

Sorry mate, just spotted what you meant! I clearly don`t know too much!
The coolant pump, which is centrally located under the wheelcase, whereas the starter is offset to this side, if it were fitted.
Just the angle of the shot I`m afraid!

Are you looking at the hand turning gear above the starter mounting? As you said, there is not a starter fitted, but the flange is there for it, just out of sight.
Not all Merlins had the hand gear fitted, but the wheelcase always had provision for it, just that some had a blanking plate fitted.

Ollie, I would have said that $20k was the upper limit on the value of this one.

It`s an early Merlin II for a Hurricane.
One of the first

Nice find.

Pete

In your opinion is that a fair price for it?

Looks like a Merlin III; not many of those about in this condition.

Sounds genuine and wouldn’t be a surprise to find it on E-Bay in the U.S. As for being NOS (new old stock, there’s an oxymoron!), the photographs show it in poor condition if it was a recent museum exhibit.
