Dakota for Midland Museum

It is stated it the latest Air Britain Publicaton of the First Seventy Years of the DC3 that a Dakota is reserved for the Modland Museum.

I have not seen this any where before but the people behing this publicetion must know some thing about a Dakota will be heading in to the Museum some time in the future.

Does any one have any further information on this item.

The Midland Air Museum is very tight on space at the moment unless they are going to get a large chunk from somewhere like the bourough people as there must be land on the airfield to make room as the Viscount 35 group will be moving F-BGNR with in the next few month to Coventry.

Is one of the remaining Dakotas fron the Air Atlantique group ear marked as it would not have far to travel to the museum with a couple of the southern end old hanars being knocked down could this be any extension area for the Midland Museum.

With the Viscount going to MAM you can probably forget about a Dak going there now.

Lets face it though, I would prefere the Viscount cause it’s more historic:D 😀

Yep, ‘SV is still there, and last time I looked was being worked on again. I’m afraid that’s all I know, but it may point towards steps being made to ensure the airframe’s future.

ANAF won’t be kept on Thales reserve for all of its life. Just a thought. Quite a unique mod too. Whilst we’re naval gazing is ‘SV still in the Almat hangar?

Well the only reason why some of this has come to light is i am reading the Dakota book and I have just come across this bit in the possibilty of the museum having a Dak to them selves.

I know the book had been delayed for a number of reasons and some of this story could be to do with this.

As for the hangars when we were there in November we found out some were being knock down and it was just a thought that there could be some connection to give space to someone and why not the museum.

I know you dont get dsomething for nothing these days but if you dont ask you dont get.

Hello Nigel,

There was a number of years ago an announcement in the avaition press that the Midland Air Museum were going to be getting an Air Atlantique Dakota.

Be interested to know why this story has resurfaced after all this time.

Hope this helps.

Regards Martin

Martin,
My turn to speculate, but you might have answered your own question there. Maybe the author/s of the book kept all the info about DC3’s that they came across and when it was time to publish this was in their notes and it has now become’ fact’ ,as it has been published in a book..

Hello Nigel,

There was a number of years ago an announcement in the avaition press that the Midland Air Museum were going to be getting an Air Atlantique Dakota.

This announcement happened before I was a member of the museum so if the version Im telling isnt quite correct I apologise.

But from what I have heard the first the museum was aware about a Dak being donated was when Air Atlantique announced it to the press.

Unfortunately the company changed its mind (I dont know why) and the promised Dak never arrived at MAM.

Maybe if the museum had received a Dakota we wouldnt be taking our Viscount there now. Who knows?

We do have a complete Dakota tail plane in storage if that counts?

As for the hangers you mention Nigel they are at a completly differant end of the site to us.

Be interested to know why this story has resurfaced after all this time.

Hope this helps.

Regards Martin

Rather than speculate, why not ask the MAM officials directly and if they’re happy for their answer to be publicised then share the outcome with the forum. In my dealings with them over the years I’ve always found all the team extremely professional and helpful.:)

Don’t worry lads, if the Britannia doesn’t kill us – we’ll have plenty of room at Speke! 😀
