Richard "Stinker" Murdoch in the RAF

I noted recently on a thread at RAF Commands that Richard “Stinker” Murdoch, of radio fame in such shows as Band Waggon with Arthur Askey, and later The Men From The Ministry, served in the wartime RAF as an Intelligence Officer.

Sadly the thread along with almost all the RAF Commands forum seems has disappeared after some sort of malfunction. I’m not sure what’s going on there.

I knew that Murdoch was in the RAF along with the likes of Kenneth Horne, Maurice Denham and Sam Costa as they appeared together in the services wireless show Much Binding In The Marsh.

But I never knew he was an IO. The post listed a squadron he was attached to but I never noted it down before the thread idsappeared. It’s rather hard to imagine young airmen returning from ops and sitting down with ‘Stinker’ Murdoch to give serious debriefs, etc.

Does anyone know more about his RAF service? Like which Squadron/s he served with? Apparently Murdoch was a Sqn Ldr, and in 1944 was with the Air Ministry where he met Ken Horne.

Any background on Wing Commander Kenneth Horne’s career would be welcome too.

Thanks.

I have an article about Richard Murdochs time at Swanton Morley in my scrapbook. I have put it online, you can view it here.

Thanks Ross.

I had taken another quick look at RAF Commands this afternoon and searched for Richard Murdoch again but the search never brought up the thread then. Thanks for locating it for me.

I’m glad your excellent forum is back together again, what a nightmare it must have been for a bit.

So Murdoch served with 226 Squadron, RAF, according to the poster on that thread. Does anyone know more? I assume he only worked within the UK and not on overseas postings as he was still doing a lot of radio work and some film work.

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave,

The thread is alive and well, currently resting in the archive.
