Can anyone tell me the name of an airfield on the right hand side of the A46, sandwiched between the A46 and the river Trent travelling south
The nearest places are Bleasby,Flintham, East Stoke and Syerston.
The low flying aircraft signs are still there, but the place doesn’t seem to be active. I have looked on Microsoft aerial views, but this does not reveal anything . Also what is or was it used for?

RAF Syerston
The airfield is Syerston and it is very active to this day. It is currently the home of The Air Cadet Central Gliding School (ACCGS); the CFS Glider Squadron; 644 Volunteer Gliding Squadron and 643 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS). It is part of Campus Cranwell and apart from a few years between 1970, when 2FTS and their JP 3 & 4s departed and March 1975 when ACCGS and 644 arrived from RAF Spitalgate it has been active since it opened on 1 Dec 1940. A fair concise history of the station can be found here http://www.644vgs.org/syerston_history.htm

I was at Syerston that day.. but a bit too young to know what was going on. In fact I live only a few miles away.. near Newton (now no more…)
What I`d give to travel back in time to some of the 50’s and early 60’s BoB displays….

I used to go to the BoB day airshows there in the 50’s, one of the tricks at the displays was for the performing a/c to dissappear below the end of the runway which terminated short of the River Trent that is much lower than the edge of the escarpment on which Syerston is situated. Fortunately I had gone to Cottesmore for a change and missed the infamous display when the Vulcan crashed, 1958 wasn’t it.

The airfield is RAF. Syerston ex 5 Group Bomber Command and now home to the RAF’s gliding organization. Syerston is the airfield that Bill Reid flew from to win his VC.with No. 61 Sqn. Another future VC. to serve at Syerston was Guy Gibson when he commanded No. 106 Sqn with Lancasters. From 1944 Syerston became home to No. 5 Groups Lancaster Finishing School (5.LFS). Post war Syerston was used mainly by Training Command.:)

RAF Syerston. I believe in my Cadet days that it was used for gliding.
