In today’s “Daily Mail” there is an article about a new big budget war movie that is being made about the early days of the SAS in North Africa. It is being made by Working Title.
This should be good news for aviation buffs as there will no doubt be some warbirds in the film. I expect the producers will have to create some full size mocks up of Axis aircraft to be blown up in the airfield attack scenes. I believe the SAS’s first mission involved parachuting from a Bristol Bombay. Will this be recreated on the screen I wonder or will the producers just take the easy option and use a Dakota?

Interesting news, a film on the SAS’s first raid will be great. I remember reading years ago there was a very strong wind that put their aircraft off course by about 60 miles or so. And several men were lost simply due to that.
You may be interested tomorrow evening UK time is a documentary on BBC Radio 4’s The Archive Hour which includes the only known, previously unbroadcast recorded interview with David Stirling.

Great News, my Grandfather was in North Africa, after Crete and Tobruk he joined the Paras and then got posted into ‘Raiding Forces’ which included the LRDG and the fledgling SAS. He was stuck behind enemy lines for quite a while after a raid on an airfield. He mainly jumped through a hole in the floor of a Wellington.
His Para Instructor (from my Grandfather’s Diary):
‘I always put Lloyd at the front of the stick as he leaves the aircraft as if entering a pub – quickly’
See, I did inherit some of my Grandfather’s skills…..:D

Hope they use CGI to re-create Harry Andrews, Percy Herbert and Dickie Attenborough, etc.
“I’m finished Cap’n, just prop me up over there with me Vickers gun, a wireless and a bit of camo netting and I’ll keep the bleeders at bay ’til you lot gets back to camp….”
