Hi i’m new to this , got details of the site from Duxford.
The reason for this thread is to shed more light on a Spitfire lost over normandy in 1944.
During one of my anual pilgrimiges to the Normandy Beaches I visited a farm ware Sargent Major Hollis won his VC. I’m not entirley sure of its exact ware abouts , some ware between Asnelles and Bernieres just up from the beach. Whilst there I spotted the instantly recognisable side engine cowling from a Spitfire. The farmer said that he had seen it crash when a child. It crashed on his farm some time between June 6-14 1944. Although not wishing to part with any of the Aluminium he kindly presented me with an Oleo Strut (minus wheel and stub axil) in remarkably good nick. I can try and post a picture if need be.
So to get to the point I would like to Know more about the plane and its Pilot.
Who was he? did he survive etc. If anybody can help it would be greatly appreciated.
Steve.

Steve,
Quite a few Spitfires were lost over Normandy during the first week of the invasion. I think you should start by looking up the loss tables in the “2nd Tactical Air Force: Vol 1: Spartan to Normandy June 1943 to June 1944” published by Classic Publications in June 2004 (ISBN 978-1903223406). By cross-checking individual losses with a map you will probably be able to narrow down your search.
