I’ve just been running through some old cine film that I acquired at a car boot sale. Lo and behold, in the middle of some run of the mill holiday scenes there is a sequence with the Red Arrows displaying above a harbour! No, I’ve obviously no idea where and when this footage was shot, my guess would be late 60’s or early 70’s. I’m presuming that the Red Arrows no longer display over such an area?? If so, when did they stop? Any info greatly received….

Thanks indeed for that, Ashley. I know about those symbols, but we’re talking here about super-8, which, I don’t think, has those symbols on it.

Lotus72…have a look along the edges of the film. Does it have Kodak and then some symbols printed on the edge?
If so, have a look here http://www.kodak.com/US/en/motion/support/h1/identificationP.shtml and scroll down to the Date Code Symbols table and see if you can identify which year it is. Of course this is only the year of the manufacture of the film stock itself, but it should help give a rough idea of when the film was used.

They used to display at Fowey, Cornwall, which is a deep inlet, but is pretty narrow. (It is a natural harbour for both private and commercial shipping. China Clay from St Austell is loaded onto cargo ships there.) A fantastic sight. 😎

The Red Arrows performed over the sea at the Salthill Airshow, Galway here in Ireland last year.
Anyone with a yearning for airshows is strongly urged to come over for this year’s show on Sunday, June the 24th, details here. Best of all, it’s free!

I can’t remember the year, very early 70’s, the Red Arrows did a splendid display at Kaivopuisto, Helsinki, Finland. Yachts with too tall masts were moved away for the event.

Right, so they probably stopped soon after that I would think…..

I dont know the date but I think the location was Brighton Marina when a Red Arrow clipped a yacht mast and ended up in the drink, pilot ok.
