I take it that was the end of negociations for the tyre then Cees!

Some years ago I located a similar tyre as a signpost for a tyre shop in the centre of Amsterdam. The owner claimed that it was bought after the war from a disposal yard in Holland. It still looked brand new and wasn’t used. Strange as no Lancasters, Lincolns or Shackletons have flown in Dutch service. I tried to swap the tyre for a tractor tyre (much more suitable for his shop I told him) but he wanted 2000 guilders at the time. I told him where to stick the tyre.
Cheers

wont fit?
I thought the shack tires wouldnt fit the lanc rims?

The tyres are Shack tyres.
Perhaps the R.C.A.F. used them when the supply of Lancaster “slicks” dried up over there? There are certainly lots of photos of Canadian Lancs with “knobbly” tyres.

Wheeling around…
Great stuff.Apparently along similar lines a company down the range bought a lot of old Spitfire/Kittyhawk/Boomerang wheels from the clearence sales after the war and put them on new build Hay carts.Still a couple of them around I,ve heard.Farmers used the oleo,s for hydraulic rams as well.We are an inventive lot us colonials…
How is the Spitfire inner tube dramas progressing Fluffy?

The tyres are Shack tyres. Yes I know the BBMF Lanc has them fitted. That is because they fit the Lanc and there are ‘plenty’ in stock.

Not plenty in stock, but Dunlop have just produced a new batch of ten for us they arrived on Friday. We put 60psi in the mainwheels and the Lancs weight is about 48,000lbs with about 800gals of fuel

Feel like a party pooper here, so appologies now.
The tyres are Shack tyres. Yes I know the BBMF Lanc has them fitted. That is because they fit the Lanc and there are ‘plenty’ in stock. Not many serviceable original Lanc tyres around.
As an aside, back in the ’90’s, the then OC BBMF was having a bad time trying to stop his landings being ‘bouncers’. He even contacted former Lanc pilots (including wartime) in an attempt to find out what he was doing wrong, so concerned was he about ‘his mistakes’.
I went up to him on day and said ‘Hey, boss, I think I know what the problem is, and it’s not you’. He looked at me with both relief and wonderment.
Turns out that the tyre bay were fitting the tyres to the Lanc wheels but inflating them to Shack pressure i.e. 85 psi. OK for a Shack weighing 92000+ lbs. The Lanc was operating a lot, lot lighter than that. Can’t remember the average Lanc display weight now. Someone like Fluffy might be able to help with the figure.
