Buccaneer XX894 Progress Report

Yesterday was a monumental day for all of the members of the Buccaneer Trust as XX894’s fuel system issues were finally fixed.
On completion of the works, the port engine was started and tested through the speed range up to 80% HP RPM.
Later during the same day, for the first time in years, 894 started and ran both engines simultaneously at, and above ground idle for approximately five minutes.
There are still more hurdles to cross before taxi runs can commence, but these are minor compared to the problems that have dogged 894’s engines for the last three years.

The port engine fires up for the first time since we started the project…

I relay from the cockpit that we have achieved 80% HP RPM. Fellow team member Malcolm gesticulates this to the camera…

If only you could hear the noise! 3 years of hard work is rewarded as 894 runs up both of her engines simultaneously for the first time in years…

Great Work! Well Done!
Just checked the files. Have 447 Buccaneer photos. In the “XX” group, I have:
XX885; 886; 887; 889; 891; 892; 894; 895; 897; 898; 899; 900; 901.
39 different photo prints in that group. (Much higher count in the negatives, but those are not sorted, yet.)
Six of XX894.
Four are 1990 photos/12 Sqn.(one notes Anniversary Marks).
Two are 1993 photos 208 Sqn.
Any preferences, before I scan & post a couple?
or Other Buccaneers?

Well done to everyone who has worked hard to get XX894 ground running 🙂

Just an idea but would it be possible to sell rides in the back seat when you do the taxi runs ?

Back seat rides are definitely an option that we would like promote, but we are still a long way off from that at the moment!

Great work, reminds me when navy buccaneers were based at Honington. Look forward to seeing these bucc’s in action again soon.

re “the other Bucc”

544 is next on the list, basically 894 took priority so that we had a runner.
All the work carried out on 894 over the past 12 months has stood us all in good sted to put what we learnt getting 894 running to good use on 544. We know what to look for now.
Though the aircraft differ quite a lot as 544 was withdrawn from squadron use a long time before the withdrawel of 894 and the rest of the fleet and as such hasnt recieved all the MOD’s 894 has. The basics are the pretty much the same though.

Plans are already afoot for this year to finish connecting the wings back up, delayed due to the weather/winds over the past few months running up to christmas. And unfortunatly a missing piece of hydraulic pipe from the wing fold system.

So if anybody has any wing fold bits or knows someone who can make it let us know please.

A lot of time has been spent after her move checking whats missing and recovering bits from other not so fortunate Bucc’s. Most of the work done on her has been to clean her up, keep her as she was on arrival if not better and start the prep work for the lists of other jobs. Just getting a panel off after all this time can take half a day.

and optimistically we have purchased an lp starter this week for 544!
Hopefull one day 544 will be a runner aswell that is certainly the plan.

certainly was a fantastic day and i noticed the other pictures of Malc gesticulating weren’t included 🙂 🙂 A lot of hard work has gone into that from you especially.

Going to be great to see her stretch her legs once more.

Lets hope its not so windy next time. I’m still cold now. And i think i’m going to have beans and sweetcorn nightmares tonight again.:)

Well done chaps, good to see all the hard work and effort was worth it in the end, still, who would have thought that the problem with the engine was a small rod!!!

I see that you have finally managed to put the website after your signature 😉

REF, XX885/G-HHAA is currently in care & maintenance, this is due mostly, to the fact that HHA were working hard on getting two Hunter’s back into Military service, expect to hear more about 885 during the course of this year.

John,

The list in short is as follows:

· Rig the throttles and adjust the idling speed on both engines.
(This will avoid asymmetric issues).
· Fix the control and protection unit for the port engine.
· Bleed the brakes and test the braking/anti-skid system.
· Replace the aileron cables to the powered flying units.
· Rig and align all flying control surfaces.
· Fix the hydraulics on the bomb bay door.
· And a list of other minor snags.

Phew, a lot more still to do yet!

Plazz

Sounds like sore and bleeding knuckles all round, will she be making any moves at this years open day?, engine runs or some slow figure of eight manouvers maybe.

Regards,

John.

Well done everyone, yet more great news from your neck of the woods

Just out of curiosity, what happened to the Buccaneer they were planning to fly in the UK, HHA’s Buccaneer I think it was?
