Many of you may remember that we posted about a new website called http://www.lostbombers.co.uk a few months ago.
This is the work of a great chap called Joe, who is now in his 78th year, and has took him many years to research.
It is a great tool for researching lost WWII bomber crews, and is very simple to use. It has been used by thousands of people, and lots of data has been downloaded.
Joe does not get to use his PC any more, and is not in very good spirits at the moment. There is no facility on his site for people to leave feedback, he has kept it simple as he funds this site from his own pocket, and I thought how nice it would be to have some comments to print off and send to him, as this is the only way he will get a personal thank you and an insight into what people think of the site.
If you could spare a moment to give his site a look and post a comment below we would both be very grateful.
Thanks
Mrs Fluffy

I would like to offer my congratulations and thanks for such and excellent site. The amount of work and effort that has gone into it is phenominal and much appreciated.
Though I do not wish to be negative in any sense as i think your website is a fantastic resource, my only concern is it does not yet seem to be complete. For example I looked for Mosquitoes lost in the famous Amiens raid of 18th of February 1944, yet none came up. It is known that several were lost that day, including Gp Capt Picard’s and also another with a chap from my town in it. Is the project ongoing as far as data entry?
Good luck with the site and happy new year.

My thanks go to Joe for the outstanding piece of work he has accomplished. If it was n’t for this original posting I would never have discovered the site.
Today I discovered the serial number for a Wellington lost in 1940. One of the crew was a relative serving as a W/Op Gunner with 99 Squadron. The database also detailed more on its crash than I had discovered.
Great piece of work and I hope it remains out there for a good number of years to come!

lost bombers
Lost bombers is a massive piece of work, and a true credit to its creator Joe.
After I read about it on the board, I got out my Uncles log book, just to see if he was listed. Sure enough , after about ten minutes I found him, and the family learned a few things that we did not know.
People like Joe are insung heros, who’s work will go on helping others for years to come.

Sir.
Lost Bombers is an excellent resource as stated by many others. There will be countless others who have used and will use Lost Bombers who haven’t seen this thread and I’m sure that their gratitude to you is also boundless. It is to be hoped the site remains in use for many years to come, there is obviously a definite need for it.
But it is more than just a resource. It is a superb and sobering tribute to those who made the supreme sacrifice. Our gratitude to you is clear, I expect that from on high some 55,000 men whom you help commemorate have given you the silent salute you so richly deserve.
The depth of your undertaking has been enormous. I only hope it has given you as much pleasure to create as it has for us to use. Thank you.
Kind regards,
Kevin Mears (kev35)

A wonderful resource and one that i’m sure myself and many others who share a common interest will come to appreciate even more as the years go by. Thank you for providing it. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

I have used this site many times – it is an excellent resource – something like this was long overdue.

Joe,
As the heroism of Bomber Command slips from memory to history the more information we can safeguard from those days the better.
Your site is a magnificent effort, it has resided in my bookmarks since I was first pointed at it and answers many of the questions I have long had over the fate of aircraft from my two ‘local’ bases at Methwold and Feltwell, as well as the operations my late father was involved with from Little Staughton.
Many, many thanks for your efforts. They are truly and deeply appreciated.

An invaluable site for those who research RAF Bomber Command
A top notch, and well laid out website. Well done and thank you, for all of your hard work and dedication. All the best to you in 2007.

Joe – Thanks!!!!!
I have used your site for information on aircraft of 51 Squadron between April and September 1944 – the months my father (now deceased) flew as a Halibag pilot. Like so many of the old Bomber Command Crews – he was very reluctant to talk about his role.
His favorite aircraft was MH-M (M for Mike) and it was through this site that I gathered the information that this aircraft was destroyed 21st November 1944 at Sterkrade. This was after my father had completed his tour and would have been instructing on Wellingtons at the time.
This is a very good site – easy to use – and even though the information is listed in a methodical way – it still manages to catch me off guard – especially the “one of 6 aircraft lost on this raid” statements.
Keep up the good work and wishing you all the best for the upcoming year!!
Chuck

Not central to my area of research but sites like this show the internet at its best. I’m in awe of anybody who can do this amount of work – and I know just how much is involved not just in researching it but typing it all in and updating.
It serves as an invaluable resource but also a memorial to bomber crews – I’ve just typed in 14 May 1940 and the list of aircraft lost over Sedan is quite sobering.

Well, I use the site all the time, and am very glad its there!

Thanks for comments so far, not sure how much it costs Joe to keep the site running, that was not the reason for posting, just to give him a boost. He’s such a genuine bloke, and this has taken years and has really been a labour of love.
He has told me, ‘Once I’ve dropped off my perch, I’ve told Helen (his daughter) to keep the site running as long as people are wanting the information.’

Fluffy and Mrs Fluffy.
I’ve only one thing to say.
Joe, thanks!!!!!!!!
My Dad’s school chum Sgt Derek Bell was killed on a raid to Hamburg whilst flying as a rear gunner with 76 Sqn in July 1943.
Using your site my research on the squadron and the raids of that period has spread outwards.
I consider it to be a unique resource.
Happy New Year
Andy

What kind of figure would be involved in sponsoring this site?
