Egyptian Air Force Short Stirlings bombing in 1948

Last night, scanning through the Osprey Combat Series, No 23 (Arab-Israeli air wars 1947-82) I was looking through the early section of the book, on page 19, where on several occasions, it mentions Royal Egyptian Air Force “bombing missions by (Short) Stirling bombers”, which were apparently carried out at night, during December 1948 😮 😮

Mucho suprised, but sadly no (daytime) pics within.

I’ve obviously seen post-war Stirling transports & the famous Belgian registered example (several pics of) , but examples carrying out (night-time) bombing raids – especially as late as 1948 – are a new one on me.

Any dark-horse forumites have any pic’s of these rare beasts & know details of how many there were & their eventual fates ????

All the Chinese et al joking aside, I never knew Stirlings flew with any other air force, besides the RAF.

You learning something new every day.

This months ‘Aeroplane’ has an article by Vladimir Kotelnikov on the Stirling sent for assessment for the Russians, and also their use of abandoned Lancasters.

We discussed the Soviet Stirling a while back:

Alex

Thanks very much for posting this.

I was not aware of the .gso file extension, especially as a picture format. A bit of googling suggests that it may be a virus infected file!

Hi Guys,

Attached is the photo of two Egyptian Stirlings. They both have traces of their Belgian civil registrations. The one on the left is OO-XAD and the other one looks like OO-XAL.

The original photo has three Stirling overflying a crowd at low altitude. The other Stirling has traces of a fuselage code and camouflage, possibly the remains of its RAF origin.

This photo has a GSO extension and I can’t get it to open with my current picture manipulator thingy. I can’t remember what I used previously as I have had this photo for at least 3-4 years now.

Copyright Dr David Nicolle.

Alex

Stirlings

I just thought it was compulsory on every thread

Andy, behave yourself !! I’m tryin’ to find out some interesting info’ here, on something exotic (anything late-Stirling related).
We’re not all walkin’ encyclopeadia-heads like you are :p :p

How about frontin’ up some photo’s on the subject matter – you must have something, after all those Dig’s, your contacts, & the Shoreham Aerojumbles ????

Wings 48 ; Top-man, fronting up those Stirling shots – didn’t know the Flems & Walloons had registered THAT many Stirlings.

Oh, to see one in real-life 🙁 🙁 🙁

Be nice to see just one (even poor) shot in 1948 Egyptian markings.

Compulsory??

Isn’t the Bader, Kenneth Williams thing wearing a bit thin now ?????

I just thought it was compulsory on every thread, and was just joining in the “fun” with an “ironic” posting.;) Actually, I agree with you. See my posting on the Bader thread!!

Thanks wings48, they are some seriously cool pics. They could tempt me to get back into modelling and buy the Airfix Stirling to do a little conversion job!

Hi Mantog,

What stops you from doing just that. Magna Models just released a
conversion set to make a Mk V Stirling.

Come on , you want it.

Cheers

NO.😀

It makes welcome change from the speculation/complaints about aircraft sales…or what paint scheme something is going to wear.

And the F/E was….

Sure, I believe it. The aircraft went U/S on a delivery flight to China. I believe Douglas Bader was one of the pilots…:D

It would be nice if true…well preserved (if sandy) Stirlings.
Sorry for the Boxing Day cynicism….:diablo:

I think the Flight Engineer was Kenneth Williams on that flight. 😀

I was told by an old airman, when we had our museum at Bletchley Park. that there where some Stirlings buried in the desert. But he would not say where untill the political situation changed. As to weather this is true or not, i dont know. but he seemed to belive it .

Hi,

I have one shot of a formation of 3 or 4 Stirlings during a flyby in Egypt. It was sent to me by Dr David Nicolle for an article I am prepapring on Egyptian Lancasters, Halifaxes and Stirlings.

If I remember correctly 1 or 2 of the Stirlings still show signs of their previous owners civil registration.

I’ll see if I can dig out the photo over the next couple of days.
