Kiss goodbye to another Shackleton if Mawgan closes….

Not in my expertise, and I don’t know what plans would be, but it wouldn’t be the easiest thing to move, without JCB intervention….

Just to put the record straight, at the moment, its the airfield that is for sale, that is the runway, tower and area around it, not the hangars and other buildings on the actual domestic site which are to be retained for the time being. The Shackleton at the moment is not under threat as it is as most people know near the front gate of the base itself on the south side of the runway.

Like a boot sale.

Wake up and smell the Roses folks, or something along those lines, UK gov inc has been quietly selling off the family silver for years now and conveniently ignoring the warning signs flagged by almost every nation that inhabits this globe, we make all the right noises about world security while we ready yet another section of our armed forces for disbandment, close bases nationwide for sale too the highest bidder under the disguise of cost saving measures and in the end find ourselves hard pressed to find enough available troops to display for the tourists once a year all at the behest of nameless, faceless and non accountable bodies hidden away in the recesses of Whitehall, no one should be the slightest bit surprised at the closure/sale of yet another airbase but if anyone looks back a little into recent history one rather chubby politician warned loud and long about the short sightedness of such measures, I often wonder how many soldiers, sailors and airmen actually died as a result of this attitude or are currently being put at risk while we sit idly by and hope the yanks will bail us out yet again. I guess we will finally wake up one day to find squads of Securicor employees trooping the colours.

OK so whats the best guess for the the very last RAF base to close. My guess would be-

1. RAF Habbaniya.
2. Kabul International.
3. Innsworth.

Anyone think of any others.

OK – it really gets to me to lose our history, especially as I have had around 18 years at Coltishall, BUT

We inherited an infastructure based on WW2, and perpetuated during the Cold war dispersal era, Thor etc. If you were to start today, with a clean sheet of paper, you would not have so many legacy sites. You would almost certainly have a few large, logically sited main bases.

What really angers me is the fact that these closures are made to save money, but that cash would be best reinvested in the RAF, not blown on other misguided schemes. ( and don’t even start me on closing a base 18 months early and moving aircraft to sites that don’t want them, lack sufficient accomodation or facilities for them, and I understand may have actually cost more than staying open! )

I’m sure the Argentine military are carefully watching events here and in the middle east.

As the War of the Worlds intro says…. “slowly and surely, they drew their plans against us” 😮

Can anyone remember the RAF one off special from the BBC back in the late 70’s or early 80’s called ‘Airforce’ ?? Well, to cap it, it was a drama about the modern future Air Defence of the UK which showed the RAF only having one air station and a squadron of fighters!

There were no helicopters, but it did still retain the RAF Regiment for some unknown reason! A very interesting film, and a probable insight into the UK’s future air force!

As with all this govts thinking, they will have just one centralised NATO Air Base, where we lease aircraft from the US (because of our special relationship). The RN will consist of 2 converted cross channel ferries and a narrowboat called Sandpiper and will be based at a conveniently placed shore base in Tamworth (The canal will have to be widened to accomodate the ferries, £50m over budget and 3 years late of course). The Invasion/Terrorism hotline will be outsourced to Bangalore, where after reporting grenade wielding maniacs heading towards the NATO Central airbase at Booker Airfield, you will be offered a great new deal on a 3G phone.

(have picked up bexWH773 toys and thrown them myself, next please)
