Can anyome tell me wether this “cat” is still abandoned at Ras As Shaykh Humayd Aqaba, Red sea as stated in David Leggs book The peacetime record.
I have tried looking on google earth to see if i can see anything but it only comes up with Aqaba for a search area.
Is it worth scanning miles of coastline or has it been removed?

I was thinking of engines etc….

Peter – for ‘recovery’ think in terms of parts not the whole.

Thank you Mark for detiled info and this nice images 🙂
By: Peter - 18th February 2007 at 16:06
would it be worth it?
Would a recovery be even worth it? Looks like corrosion is setting in heavily around the engines where they have dropped onto the front fuselage?

Vader,
The Arabic titled pics in my earlier post are from this middle eastern forum

Much earlier photos exist on flicker prior to the wing collapse, taken in February 1995.

Very, very sad pics, and it’s not the only one! Bits and pieces of our history just rotting away or going to the cutters torch! Kudos to folks like Catalina .org and all the other groups trying to save their little corner of it from the bureaucrats and bill collectors!
Merry Christmas to all, and if anyone asks what they can give you for Christmas, point them to the non-profit of choice!

Here are some pics of N5593V showing the wing collapse off the rear pylon mount due to the weight of the engines.

I guess the Bedouin Militia were better shots than the Jamaican Police. i recall a similar incident from a few years ago when pop-music star Jimmy Buffett landed his Grumman Albatross off of a beach in Jamaica and the police , suspecting a drug trafficker, surrounded his A/C and opened fire. Fortunately, no one was injured and after he explained himself, was allowed to fly away home!
I guess people flying large seaplanes are fair game! They are such easy targets! 😉

The photo’s on Flicker are quite old and the aircraft is far more deteriorated as shown by google earth.
The Wing has toppled off the rear mount of the pylon due to the weight of the engines and is sitting leading edge down on top of the cockpit.
There are pics on a middle east forum I will post the link when I am back home from holidays.

Any links to somewhere for an explanation of why she was abandoned like that?
Try: http://uk.geocities.com/kendo1938/catalina.htm
Catalina Society (www.catalina.org.uk) has updates on changes to the world’s Cat population (by David Legg) but no recent info on N5593V.

She was on a round the world flight with Thomas Kendall and his family in 1960.
In March of that year they landed at Ras Ash Shaykh Humayd and were attacked by Bedouins attached to the Saudi Arabian Army who thought they were Israli Commandos, after shooting up the plane T.Kendall and the others were arrested for questioning. They were released later to the American consul but had to abandon the PBY and The Saudi authorities refused to admit liabillity. So there she sat gradually getting worse and worse.

Hmm, looks like GE is more recent than those photos, the plane looks half buried and broken.
Any links to somewhere for an explanation of why she was abandoned like that?
