Substantial Lancaster wreck from Berlin lake (1997)

Hi all,

In the German Technikmuseum there are the substantial remains of a Lancaster that were recovered from the Wünsdorfer Lake near Berlin. It was recovered by the museum team during 1997. I cannot find anything about it’s identity having seen the remains on display a few months ago (very impressive). I though having read somewhere that it was 57 sqn but not sure about that.

Anyone have any idea?

Cheers

What an awesome museum – it just goes to show what a lot can be done with wrecks. Good for them.

http://www.lostbombers.co.uk/bomber.php?id=9269

This site is virtually a word for word copy of Bill Chorley’s Bomber Command Losses, without even mentioning the series as the source. The worst example of plagiarism I have ever seen!

love the Ju87 captioned ‘Unknown’ Presumably this is the aircraft associated with the defunct RLM collection as the auctioneers representatives said it was currently in a museum in Germany.

The wingskins were replaced and looked very `clean` when I visited the musuem with EHVB during september. That museum is first class and a must see if you are in the area.

Yes Cees, I remember, the hottest day ever for september that day in Berlin. They also have a great 109 and a bit damaged Stuka. Nice museum, and I returned with over 100 great shots ( and 200 more in the Luftwaffenmuseum later that afternoon after a blistering walk hill up in tropical temperatures)

The Me110 is original but was restored from the remains of the former AFC aircraft wrecks which were imported by Jim Pearce. The wingskins were replaced and looked very `clean` when I visited the musuem with EHVB during september. The leftovers are still in store and could yield another for an interested collection. Make them an offer they cannot refuse perhapse=

Interesting to see a Swastika on the tail of the JU88, I thought that this symbol was banned in Germany, not that I’m against it, for authenticities sake, it should be on there.
Is the Me110 original, it looks a bit too tidy to be completely real.

Thanks Rob, things are much clearer now. Am I right that at the time, 57Sq just moved from Scampton to East Kirby? Salu2

This I know. it was a Lancaster mk 3, belonging to 57 Sq. It was lost on September 3rd 1943. Its code was PX-O and it had nr JA-914. Did the crew survive ( any names?), and from which base they took off? Realy big chunks of the Lancaster survive, and the wing and undercart are still in a very good condition.

Fourth panorama up from the bottom, to the right of and back from the Mig. Its tucked away in the background.
I dont speak German either, and havent figured out how to post links up on here.Dunno if its Lanc, but the only thing I can see that looks vaguely like bomber wreckage.

Is that the mid section with a wing attached you can see in the panoramic view section of their website?
