Great find of that web site Zhukov121 – I find that the aircraft that Mark12 saw (in his short trousers?) was piloted by Lt. R. C. Dimmock

Later Commanding Officer of HMS Hermes.

Just had a look around – is this of any use?
Taken from http://www.ejection-history.org.uk/Aircraft_by_Type/SeaHawk.htm

“29th March 1966
Indian Navy Sea Hawk 300 Sqdn Lt. Yashwant M. Bhide ejected Martin-Baker
The story is about Lieutenant Yashwant Bhide who was then with the 300 Squadron. During an exercise his Seahawk got into trouble off Bombay and he had to eject before the aircraft crashed. He spent a whole day and part of the night in the water and was eventually rescued by a fisherman and brought ashore at Versova. Hastening to reassure his parents then living in Bombay-his father had retired from the ICS and was the Chairman of the Bank or an Insurance Company I believe – he called from a public telephone and told his rather who had come to the phone that he was all right but that the aircraft was a total write-off. His father is reported to have said, ‘Your mother and I are happy to have you back; but tell me, was the plane insured or do I have to pay for it?’ “

Looking on various interweb map sites, Versona is not too far away from Chavakkad.

Might be useful….

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have no idea what they plan to do with the wreck. (at this point). I am trying to find out if there is any interest among others here . But with so many sea hawks preserved around, i doubt if people will act on yet another type.

I too agree that it is probably a Sea Hawk. The tail looks very similar, and if you look at the center section wreckage you can clearly see the fuselage engine ducts. Interesting photographs… thanks for posting. Do you know what will happen with the remains?

Cheers. Richard

Sea hawk tail – from the Vol.1

oh, Mark… care to share those sea hawk pics you took? 🙂

Not much to share, that was the most recognisable bit. We were ‘freeloading’ at Laffan’s Plain during a trade day at Farnborough circa 1958. One of the Navy display team started to trail smoke and then broke away and dived headlong on to the horizon line. We beetled over to the scene to find that it actually gone straight in on the hard standing at Blackbushe. The pilot ejected and was I believe OK. Blackbushe being thick with spotter/photographers capturing the visiting military, I was not surprised to see in the next mornings National Press a great shot on the front page, of the aircraft just feet from impacting.

I have brightened up the previously posted image, taken the following day.

From the ‘Hampshire Aircraft Crashes’ website.

I quote:-

01-09-58 XE462/R106 Seahawk FGA6 800Sq ,cr Blackbushe.(800Sq Aerobatic Team)

Well not Spitfire/Seafire and I initially wondered if perhaps a Tempest.

The Seahawk does look like a strong possibility. Note no obvious heavy duty tailplane spar evidence.

I searched for a crashed Seahawk I had photographed but unfortunately my view did not reveal the inner structure but does show the high set tailplane.

The rear fuse looks very much like that of a Sea Hawk

But it isn’t. Although the tail looks sea hawkish, I’m sure there’s a beefier bottom section in there for the tail hook.

I’ll grab my sea hawk ap’s !!
