Unknown signs on Halifax tail unit

Hi all,

here a picture of the tail unit from crashed Halifax.
Up to date I research this crash site and became this picture from a time witness.
May be the white signs on the tail can help to confirm my speculation, what means the signs ?

Regards from Kiel

I think I’m correct in saying that all of the Merlin engined Halifaxes (Mk.I,II,V) originally had the triangular fins.
This photo shows an early Halifax: http://www.histoiredumonde.net/images/20_eme_siecle/avions/halifax/intro.jpg

The marking on the tail (if you are talking about the one I painted in on your photo) is simply a national marking. Almost all British aircraft had them.

Hi Eddie,

thanks for your great work 🙂
What type of Halifax used this triangular fins?

On Thursday the explosive ordnance disposal have found 50 firebombs. A lot of other signals was located, may be explosive bombs and the engines of this aircraft.
On Monday next week we will recovered the located signals.
I hope we can recovered the engines to find out more about the Halifax and the crew.
In my blog http://spurensuchesh.blogspot.com/ you can find a little report in german.

More about this salvage on Monday !

On interest are the signs on the tails. What does this sign means ? Every reference about it are important.

Hi – are you looking at the fin flash on that aircraft? It’s an early Halifax with the triangular fins. I’ve re-coloured it to clarify.
