19 (F) Sqn, Spitfire LF.XVIe

Chaps, need your help!

Over the past few years I’ve been building a collection of 1/48 scale models of all types used by 19 (F) Sqn, RAF (one of my old sqns). So far I’ve managed to tie together examples of all types vs reg vs side codes, but the Spitfire LF.XVIe’s used by the sqn during 1946 eludes me. All I can find is a front aspect showing that the spinner was striped blue, white, blue.

Can any of you help. I have got a short list of regs (just not with me at the moment – Doh!) if it helps.

Regards,

John Rawlings in “Fighter Squadrons of the RAF” lists SL690 QV*A and TE470 QV*B.

In the book by Paul Lucas “Camouflage and Markings No 1 RAF Fighters 1945-50 UK Based” there is a photo of 19Sqdn Mk XVIs at Biggin Hill in September 1946. This shows starboard sides of QV*J, QV*W and QV*X. It could be that with the original of this photo you might be able to pull out the serials but I don’t think that would be possible with the reproduction in the book. QV*W has the sqdn code behind the roundel.
