More… 'what a/c is this from ?'

Dave in Melbourne (aka ‘Battle’) has asked me to post this photo of a drop tank converted to a boat he spotted at an autojumble at the weekend.

Possibly similar to Mosquito, but on this one the mounts have being cut away.

Bruce, what say yee….?

It may be an antipodean thing that they were made of steel as we have a steel pair at Ferrymead plus one alloy one.

However something also says that that may not be true as the two steel ones came to us with the material from HR339 and she never saw service here in NZ so I’d expect them to be the tanks she flew out from the UK with…but who knows.

It must also be a local thing to make water vessels out of them as I had an uncle who made several into canoes/boats. The same guy made a Hudson into a horse float so he and I didn’t see eye to eye on a few things! 🙂

Mossie tanks were made of wood – well, the smaller ones were anyway. The big ones were aluminium, and they may have been steel. I will investigate…!

were they made of steel?

No.

They were made from a resin-bonded paper material. The modern generic term for it is SRBP – Synthetic Resin Bonded Paper.
