Viggen could break cover at Newark

According to the Newark Air Museum website the Viggen handover has been arranged for early December and is says that:

“As part of the preparation for this ceremony the aircraft will be moved into a new display position in Display Hangar 2 after November 27th 2006.

To give people the opportunity of photographing Saab Viggen the museum hopes to display the aircraft outside from Monday, November 20th to Sunday, November 26th inclusive. 10am until 4pm each day including weekends”.

The final confirmation will not be until this Sunday; there are more details on the link below.

I have posted about this before but I am too busy to find the link, but below are the details that I posted:

“According to the latest Newark Air Museum Guide Book the MiGs they have on loan from Hawarden Air Services are as follows:

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23ML “Flogger” – 024003607 “07”

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-27K “Flogger” – 61912507006 “71”

But it may be that the MiG-23, ’07’ is an early M type not an ML; also the MiG-27, ’71’ might not be a K variant as this had a different and more sophisticated Laser Rangefinder in the nose.

Both are listed as having been delivered from Hawarden, Clwyd on May 22nd 2002.

Both aircraft are in the aircraft list on the museum website”

On a different subject but with regards to Newark Air Museum

Are there plans for restoration of the Mig 23 and Mig 27?

British Canuck

Detailed in the current NAM newsletter [November 2006 issue] are the following restoration projects active on site at Winthorpe since August 2006: Canberra PR7, Vulcan, Shackleton, Ralleye, Buccaneer, Heron, Canberra PR9 cockpit, Sea Harrier, Varsity, Javelin, Meteor NF12 and Hummer microlight.

Some of those projects are mentioned on the Airscene link below on October 1st and September 11th entries.

http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/scene.htm

I did hear a whisper that the Buccaneer team might move on to one of the Migs when the Bucc is finished.

Having checked on Newark’s website tonight it seems as though the Viggen is now outside; see link below – second item on their list.

Thanks…

And I guess there are still quite a few aircraft undercover in the other large hangar. It has been at least 6yrs since my last visit and my minds fails me 🙂

Very nice collection at Newark..

Does anyone have a current list of the aircraft stored in the new hangar at Newark?

Not at present but I will make a call and try to get an up to date list. There is an aircraft list on their website but this doesn’t show those aircraft that are inside or in which building.

http://www.newarkairmuseum.co.uk/aircraftlist.cfm

I know from when I last visited it is liable to change – mainly due to Viggen re-build having taken place inside the building.

TT,

I Googled ‘Monospar’ and came up with the following report from 2005.

http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/hangar/2005/monospar/monospar.htm

I’ve also heard that as well as corrosion the aircraft’s spine was also twisted, perhaps due to a crash in the 1930s.

Yes I believe that the Canberra B(I)8 is WV787.

TT

My understanding is that the CARG situation at Innsworth has been in doubt for a while, but still nothing official from my sources about the Monospar.

Last time I visited NAM the Lee Richards Annular replica was on show in Hangar 1 although not assembled as yet.

Not sure about the buildings at Innsworth though.

TwinOtter-

yes as I said, the axe has been hanging over them for at least 5-6 years

Thanks for the gen on the L-R

The buildings are definitely Canadian and WW2 origin. Not only was i told that but the date 1942 and Canadian Construction Co. Ltd (or similar) are branded into the wood with a WD arrow!!

The monospar restoration was/is superb, its a shame the frame was so rotten – enough to preclude a return to flight – but the restoration was of almost flightworthy standard…

Could well be – When I saw Steve Jones (great chap) of CARG by sheer chance at the Sywell Show he said that the axe is about to fall at Innsworth – (been threatened for some 5+ years now) and of course they were restoring the Monospar- I wonder where all their other bits and pieces will end up – IIRC they had quite a few turrets, including I think an immaculate Whitley turret and possibly one from a Blenheim….it was a long while ago when I went there!

In any event, the buildings they occupied were wartime canadian built sectional timber buildings in great condition (40 years of ‘jankers’ creosoting) – marked 1942 – they presumably would be up for disposal now prior to their elimination, TT

I spent a while at RAF Innsworth awaiting an overseas posting (many years ago!) and was told that the camp was taken over from the Army who used it in WW1 as a cavalry remount depot, so at least some of the buildings could be considerably older than the Canadian ones.
