Drem, perhaps the Mike Harding album may not be too hard to come by after all? http://www.mikeharding.co.uk/music/bombers/bombers_2.html

Hi Kev,
Eric Bogle originaly wrote the song as NML but GFOF is used as a 2nd title.
Remember being in a pub after a Scotland/Ireland Rugby game hearing all these Ireland supporters singing it and the look of disbelief when it was pointed out that it was written by a Scotsman…
Seem to remember the “reply” song you are talking about but not written by Eric Bogle.
His new CD features a song called “Hallowed Ground” in which he goes back to France for the last time.
Yup, he wrote “And the Band”………………….
Another good song for this time of year is by Mike Harding called Bomber Moon though I believe it is hard to come by.

Drem.

I believe the song you referred to is actually called the Green Fields of France. It is very moving. There is another song to the same tune called Willie McBride’s Reply in which young Willie replies to the visitor to his graveside. Never heard it sung but think it is equally moving.

Am I also right in thinking Bogle wrote ‘And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda.’?

A few years ago now I was the manager of a large supermarket. We did the 2 mins silence, which I anounced the start of on the tanoy. The whole shop came to a compleate stand still apart from 2 old ladies who carried on walking round and talking loudly without noticing everyone else standing glaring at them. As they arrived at the tills the started to complain that everyone was just standing around doing nothing. In the end I said “it’s the 2 mins silence”. They then carried on talking loudly about how nice it was that we were doing the silence!!

Nice song but am still waiting to find one that betters Eric Bogle’s “No Mans Land”.
