Jervis Bay

Hi all

This one is nothing to do with aviation but worth mentioning never the less. On this evening in 1940 an Armed Merchant Cruiser of His Majesty’s Navy ordered the convoy it was guarding to scatter, these orders having been given the ship turned towards the enemy hoisting her battle ensigns as she did so and steamed into history.

The converted Merchantman was HMS Jervis Bay, the ship she was about to fight was the German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer, the unequal struggle lasted approximately 22 minutes, at its end the Jervis Bay sank with 187 of her crew including her captain.

That heroic 22 minutes allowed a large part of the convoy to escape, so if you are having a drink tonight how about a toast, silent or otherwise to the memory of “HMS JERVIS BAY” and her gallant crew!

Well remembered.

I guess I should really blitz this post as having no historic aviation relevance.

But I won’t.

Brave, brave men.

Thanks Moggy, it is all to easy to forget!

Thanks for the reminder! My father was in that convoy, so I drink to their memory. 🙂
