As the exam questions used to say, debate!

Yes no2 Shed is still used by Bre and Warner Bros also use it.
I thought both sheds are listed.

So two sheds:
Number 1 (northern shed) erected in 1915 and extended in 1924 to 1926 to build R101. This one is grade 2 listed.
Number 2 (southern shed) originally erected in Pulham, Norfolk to build R100 and moved to Cardington in 1928. This one obviously in considerably better condition.
So number 2 shed was the one used by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and then Warner Bros.
Anybody know why only shed number 1 is listed?

Yes the refurbished hanger still has the building in it. The building reaserch establishment use it. The same hanger is used for the filming of Batman and now a new film which i can say no more about.
Creaking door:
Yes there is some form of scrapyard along the back, i believe the trucks are used as a fireworks store. Certainly if you drive along the back road there the owner has a sign up advertising fireworks.
The site on the Bedford side of the Hangers has now been flattened apart from 4 buildings, the big imposing officers mess?, 1 building i dont know what it is for behind, 1 that seems to be used by the police and the Cadet hut.

One of the hangars still has a house in it i believe ?
They should be preserved as if you have ever been in one they are truely amazing.
I think the google earth pics are 2003 but show the one good hangar and the one that is not so good, you can even tell that from space !!

Amazingly good satellite imagery on Google Maps of Cardington. Not sure how old these are as I thought the site was flattened except for the hangars.
Is that a scrapyard along the disused railway line to the east?

hasn’t Cardington been used as a rehearsal space for bands? I seem to remember Paul McCartney using it a few years ago.

I still dream about airships every time I drive through Cardington.

That’s odd. Every time I see Jordan/Katie Price I find myself thinking about a dead heat in a Zeppelin race

Batman film has been filmed, they are due to work on a new one very soon.
I did not think they built them there, just serviced them.

Not sure about the status of Airship Industries but I don’t think there is any production activity at Cardington.
The other hangar is rented to Warner Bros to shoot a Batman film.
One hangar was listed for sale recently…..only four million quid.
I notice that the Cargolifter shed at Brand in Germany is now some Center Parcs style venue called ‘Tropical Islands’ with 850 sun-loungers.
Get those towels ready!

I thought there was still the airship company in one corner of one hanger there.

And the distance between Duxford and Fowlmere is?
Moggy
About two and a half miles at a guess?
Actually I was thinking more as a commercial viability for basing warbirds than from any physical limitation.
This part of the country is well served already but I still dream about airships every time I drive through Cardington.

There used to be a Cub flying from the space between the hangers and the met office site. The Hanger is still there but i do not know if anything is still in it.

Reckon you could get a 800 yard strip facing SW (prevailing!) in there Moggs. Got any spare cash? 😉 Hate to think of the rotor from the hangars though 😮

Too close to Old Warden and Duxford (and Cardington village) for aircraft other than airships.

Airships not Fighters.
Too close to Old Warden and Duxford (and Cardington village) for aircraft other than airships.
Not sure about the housing. Depends where they build it. On the former technical site is probably OK so long as the green fields to the south and east are left intact there is still the possibility of airship use.

If the site could somehow be re-used by aviation, then so much the better. How much airfield is attached and does anyone have a multi-million pound fighter collection they want to rebase?
