I assume it still has the original turbojets fitted?

No, all QANTAS 707-138’s were retro fitted with JT3B turbofans by Boeing. This aircraft was converted in August 1961.

I remember returning from a trip standing at the end of Mildenhall’s runway covered in soot from the KC135s, the amount of smoke they chucked out was incredible!

An update for those interested. The flight crew for the flight to Australia are due to arrive in Southend early this week. Ground and taxi runs are scheduled for 21st and 22nd, with test flight scheduled for 23rd. The 24th is for any last maintenance required, with the aircraft then moving to Stansted to fuel up for the first hop to Montreal. Departure from Stansted will be on the 25th or 26th November with the aircraft due in Australia all being well on the 5th or 6th December.

The aircraft will be operating under a certificate limiting it to 50 hours and 20 cycles.

At the visit to Boeing field John Travolta’s 707 will join the aircraft.

The team behind the scenes are working hard at the moment to have approval for a display flight over Sydney harbour with hopefully the HARS Super Connie and a QANTAS 747 joining the 707 to celebrate its arrival. That would be a great sight to see and make for fantastic footage!

Well done and all the best to the team who have worked their butts off to bring this project to fruition.

Hopefully a board member is able to post photos of the test flight!

I was at Southend on the 13th September and the aircraft still had the tail plane off and undergoing serious work. Good effort all round get her back into shape so quickly.

The Aussie engineers working on the aircraft were a friendly bunch and kindly let me have a look around. It’s an amazing contrast to our usual machinery – state of the art interior circa 1975. Thanks guys!

Very good to see that some airlines are mindful of their heritage!
