DUXFORD FORMATION – GULFSTREAM/SPITFIRES

Anybody id the Gulfstream(GV?)/two Spitfire formation over Duxford this afternoon? Could this have been the arrival of the new owner of the Buchon and Hurricane? The Gulfstream seemed to beetle off at low level after two passes with the Spits, heading for Cambridge no doubt.

There is a half decent picture of the Blair Force Global’s underside on Airliners.net in which you can see the Spit outline bit more clearly – link below.
Personnally I think it looks a bit naff!

Have you yet politely pointed out to the gentleman that the real PL344 needs its strange ‘reversed grey’ paintwork correcting? If so, I believe the weather is quite pleasant in Florida in the winter.

Believe me he is well aware of this error, and the roundel police have issued a summons for corrective action 😉

There is indeed a planform painting of a full size MkIX Spitfire on the centre lower surfaces based on PL344.

There was hardly anybody at Duxford yesterday so i’m wondering if I was the only person there taking any pictures. I was certainly the only person standing by the Area 51 corner when all this was happening.

That’s because I was on top of the tower for the first run and then out on the airfield as the target for the formation for the second run 🙂
The pilot of IAC161 was indeed Cliff Spink and his passenger was the owner of the Global Express (he is also the owner of a number of more interesting aeroplanes 😉 ). There is indeed a planform painting of a full size MkIX Spitfire on the centre lower surfaces based on PL344. The object of the excercise was to get some pictures of the Global and “Three” Spitfire formation.
Lets hope my pictures (on film) come out 😮

Many thanks for clarifying that for me chaps. His name and flying has been known to me for a number of years, but i’ve not known him by sight until now.

Cheers

If somebody could tell me who the pilot of the TR 9 is i’d much appreciate it. Both he and John Romain gave me a smile and a wave as they passed me.

Here we go. Here’s a small selection of what I took yesterday. Hope you find them ok. If somebody could tell me who the pilot of the TR 9 is i’d much appreciate it. Both he and John Romain gave me a smile and a wave as they passed me.

Afternoon all.

I just thought i’d join this thread as I was at Duxford yesterday and watched the whole event from takeoff to landing. A short 30 minute hop for the Spits which incidentally were Cliff Spink’s Spitfire Mk XVI (TD248) with John Romain at the controls and the Irish twin Mk 9 (PV202). Alas the pilot of the latter was unknown to me by sight. It was a lovely fly by and yes an invasion striped Spitfire was painted on the underside of the Global Express.

I took some pictures. If anyone can suggest a good way of posting them on here, i’ll be happy to oblige. 🙂

A Global Express is not as good as a Gulfstream 550!

But the RAF are using a version as the Sentinel R1 very soon.

What on earth is a Global Express? It sounds like an air freight company.

If you look at the bio of Tom Blair he has an extended family which he met with a Falcon 900 – maybe he has had an upgrade !

A little research on “aviation international news online” dated july 2006,has a paragraph on painting and finishing, and refers to the owner of a Global Express requesting the image of the spitfire IX he had flown to be applied to the underside.
So i take it it is this one,and the new owner of the hurri, and buchon(?).

Ah – so it was a Global Express. At least I did realise that it was not a VC 10! It was certainly an interesting formation. Someone did tell me that the biz jet’s owner has had the silhouette of a Spitfire in plan form painted across the underside of the jet – I was not close enough to see if that was the case.
