Added to which ‘Spitfire’ became the generic term for any fighter with a roundel on it.

I could well have been a Tempest or Typhoon, or a Mustang. And that’s assuming that it did indeed carry a roundel.

It is certainly worth asking the question here, much information has been turned up from far flimsier starting points, but I doubt this has an serious chance of a successful conclusion.
