AADE at Ysterplaat AFB

Right everybody.
This weekend they are having the African Aerospace and Defence Expo at Ysterplaat AFB in Cape Town. This week I’ve seen flying over my house: an immaculate Shackleton, a Buccaneer with red wings, blue underbody and white dorsal scheme. It has RAF roundels. Is this Mike Beachyheads recent aquisition? Also, 3 Cheetah C’s, the new Hawk LIFT, Aero L-39, Oryx/Puma, Mirage IIICZ, Lightning, Hunter and a lot more.

There will also be a Spitfire, Hawker Sea Fury (?) various C-47’s/Dakotas, L-29’s, Harvards etc. I intend to take my crappy digital camera and hopefully get some pics. I need to make a few millions as I have always wanted to own a Sukhoi SU-15. I want Beachyheads life!!! 😀

An aerobatics aircraft has crashed into Table Bay, Cape Town, according to unconfirmed reports on Friday afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses accounts on Cape Talk radio the incident happened about 4pm.

Helicopters are reported to be circling the area where the “Dolphin” Nan older type of Czechoslovakian aerobatics plane – was seen to crash into the water.

Eyewitnesses said two groups of four planes each were practising formation flying at the time.

One flew too low and hit the water raising “a huge spout of water”.

Air Force spokesperson, Captain Ronald Maseko, confirmed “an incident took place”, but said he had no details and could not comment immediately.

Oh know. I think it is an L-29 from the SASOL TIGERS… 🙁

It’s a little quieter today for some reason. It might be ‘cos it’s a trade day. Anyhow, I’ll be going tomorrow. I have a crappy digital camera that isn’t the best, but I will take some piccies…

yes, one of the Lightnings is silver and has RAF roundels. I’m lucky enough to work about 2km away from Ysterplaat right on the normal landing flight path. So I get to see these planes from very close up. And ‘cos it is a family business, I get to look at them anytime i want. :diablo: 😎

Don’t get too excited about the spit

…on the program it shows up as a Spitfire Mk 26 – a quick google returns this:

Also, if you happen to be at the show, stop at the project 6832 display :

Saw the Bucc yesterday – glimpses were a bit fleeting, but it looked as if she was painted in “raspberry ripple”

A Spitfire?

Airworthy?

Vickers Supermarine original?

I wonder which one that is.
