Hi everybody,
Dont know if this thread has been done already but regards “Battle of Britian Day” on TVs “The History Channel”, was anybody as disapointed as I was with the monotonous use of clips from the film The Battle of Britian in a lot of the programmes
Dont get me wrong, I love this film but regards one of the programmes solely on The Spitfire, why not use origonal footage, there’s plenty about

if you mention the hawker hurricane (the true hero)
Hawker Hurricane the true hero you got to be kidding me!!
The true Hero’s are 6 feet under or at least a lot of them are and the survivors getting fewer every year. It is the men who flew these machines that are the true heros and never should one forget.
Ok I might just be getting shirty over this thread but planes are machines and while we all get attached to inanimate objects over the years my full and complete repect goes to every last one of those brave young men that fought and died for us.
and I might just let you get away with saying that these aircraft became icons of the Battle of Britain which indeed they were.

Oh come on. Everyone knows that the real Bf 109 has a Rolls-Royce engine (albeit a Kestrel rather than a Merlin)

Curious to know
You would have thought that were they going to do a proper programme , rather than just take bits and pieces from a film they would be prepared to go through the proper channels to make it as authentic as possible, but alas……….
I for one though did,nt know the Luftwaffe were using Merlins in some of their aircraft during the battle 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

It is an unfortunate thing but most modern programme makers want just colour footage and granted there is some around but you would have to get clearances from numerous sources where if you borrow bits from a film you only need one clearance.
As for the spitfire element unfortunately we created that problem ourselves as if you talk to people from other countries about the battle they all have impression (erroniously) that the only aircraft the RAF had in the battle was the spitfire, if you mention the hawker hurricane (the true hero) people just look puzzled.
