Spitfire PL944

Walking through the Hangars at DX on Sunday 3rd, I was pleasantly surprised to see Spitfire PL944 sitting there.

I think I’m probably being ignorant, but I don’t recall ever hearing about this airframe?! Can anyone fill me in with details…does it fly, if not will it, owner, registration, past history etc.

Thanks.

Why’s it at Duxford?

So that some eminent Spitfire experts can be caught out, some others can discuss what an accurate colour scheme it is (with a false serial of course!) Jonathan F care to comment on this one (?) and some others can pat themselves on the back for a job well done, especially following a torrent of undiserved criticism for the last GRP replica to exit Hangar 5 at DX. The boys at ARC obviously DO know how to do accurate colour schemes when allowed to. Maybe some others on site might like to take note…..I notice their green/brown affair is now suffering distinct cannon droop!

Make the most of PL944 as it’s off to sunnier climes soon

Oh and the mystery serial….how about PropShop Ltd,(Mark) 9 No. 4 of 4….hey presto PL944 🙂

Why’s it at Duxford?

Everything’s got to be somewhere? 😀 And DX is a Spitfire black hole that sucks them all in? 😉

Sorry, don’t know.

Yes, thanks for all that. I’d seen in the Spitfire Show programme that there was a PL344 and assumed there had been a typo or mis-painting somewhere along the line!

Are you sure? My records show that there never was a PL944 built…. or was there 😉 Maybe PL344 isn’t right either….perhaps that would have been more accurate being PL944…..if you know what I mean!

Still I did warn you on that other thread a few weeks ago…..and it still managed to catch some real experts out I believe 🙂

I think I know what you mean. 🙂

The replica or the post?

The replica reads PL944 as in this crop from a Gary Brown shot.

The replica is supposed to represent Tom Blair’s Mk IX, PL344, it was mispainted in error.

Its a replica – PL944 should actually read PL344!

Not a GRP replica, is it? I thought I saw something about one recently at Duxford…
