Did it really happen?…….

I heard a few days ago, a story regarding a forced landing of a V bomber at Bagington.

Apparently, in 1963 a Vulcan bomber took off from Bitteswell Aerodrome and shortly after takeoff ran into trouble. Unable to make it back to Bitteswell, the aircraft made a direct route into Bagington Aerodrome for an emergancy landing. It is said the aircraft took up all the runway and pierced the airfields surrounding fencing. A second person also heard the story and a third remembers being in secondary school at the time and recalls a Vulcan bomber flying extremely low overhead, not what he was used to seeing as they were normally a lot higher by then.

Their is no apparent Media coverage from the tabloids and the records of a landing of that type of aircraft at Coventry at that time have not appeared. The only Vulcan recorded landing at Bagington is ours, XL360, in 1983.

Is their anybody around in here that can shed light on the matter? Did a Vulcan really make a forced landing at Coventry in 1963? If it did, how did they get it back out?

And where was it you heard this?

It was actually mentioned at the Air Museum by someone who actually works in the control tower at Cov.

Any connection with the picture you posted of XL319 landing at Sunderland on its delivery flight?

None what so ever! Just used that picture to give a feel of what it my of been like back then in the papers!

I was not aware that Phantom Phixer had already mentioned this in a thread but saying that, how did he get to hear about it? Perhaps it was never printed in the papers because at that time the M.O.D. might not of wanted it printing for secrecy. It may have been on a Top Secret mission for all we know! They have cocked up before and it’s been a long time before the truth has come out about things like this, look at the TSR2 that fell off the back of a low loader not long before it was due to make it’s maiden flight! There is a picture of the incident somewhere.
