Are there any models of the T.IX version of the Spitfire out there?
I’m interested in any scale and any medium – they could be die-cast, kits, solid wood or almost anything. Current or obsolete, any recommendations welcome.
No, sadly, I can’t afford a real one…

Geoff Coughlan did a conversion of the 1/48 Arii/Airfix MKVIII a fewf years agon in the Tamiya Modelling Magazine. from what I rem he didnt move the cockpit forward any and the resulting model didnt seem to suffer to much for it. If you wanna be daft thought and have the space check this plan out for a TR9

just remembered Bravo Delta Models do a wooden pre painted ML407 as well.
Not endorsed by the “Grace Spitfire” though.

There were some solid wood models of the Grace Spitfire available at one of the show stalls at Dx at the weekend. Not sure that these are ‘officially approved’ though.
Correct, not ‘officially approved’ at all.

My Airfix conversion was with a modelling knife, sandpaper and a spare canopy with a bit of acetate. Worked pretty well, looked not bad, then it got flattened by a book!

I wonder if the front cockpit is moved forward (48 inches – one/one scale) on the models. My own conversion involved the Airfix MkV, a hacksaw, and a spare canopy crammed on the back. No mess, no fuss, no accuracy!

I stand corrected XN923. he he
Ive got the 1/48th example and just assumed that the 1/72nd one was also for a Hasegawa kit. Interestingly mine is earmarked to be a yellow G-AIDN. I can hear the purists howling already.
I have to be honest I do prefer the Grace type canopy just looks nicer although I understand why the original hood would be better for training especially on landing.

Presently your only option is to use Brigade models conversion set. They produce a 1/48th & 1/72nd conversion. You will need to purchase the HAsegawa kits to use as the donor kit. the conversions are both for the orginal TR9 ie with the big ugly rear hood not the later Grace type hood as seen on ML407.
The 1/72 Brigade conversion is aimed more at the Italeri Spit MkIX (or according to the instructions in mine anyway) – it would probably work with other kits but might need more work. The conversion is pretty basic and typical of older style short run injection moulded kits, so heavy moulding, flash, a lot of thinning of various bits needed (especially tail) and quite a bit of work to get a good fit. I’ve given up on mine for the time being though I dare say I will go back to it. Externally it’s quite good though.

I love the Vickers conversions far more than the double bubble – take a look at a Charles Brown picture of G-AIDN in yellow and she looked superb.
I love ’em both, to be honest, and although the Grace conversion is far sleeker (and lends itself better to a wartime (single-seater) scheme), the Vickers bubble makes the aircraft stand out.
In my opinion, of course 😉

Dont believe they are! Could be another operator of a similar shaped aircraft may be intrested – may need to get a different set of green and gray paint though!

Rumour has it that a short run of resin kets will be produced in the near future of the Grace type two seater. If memoray serves me right its going to be czech master.

I think there are conversion kits in some scales floating around, but not sure who makes them, or even if they are available, sadly!
Although, if you want to “supersize” your models, there is a one-third scale version of the Grace Spitfire floating around! 😮
